Had a bad battery and bought a new one. Got it all charged up and rain was on the way, so I was rushing. I hooked up the small ground lead to positive (and everything else up correctly). Turned the power on and now the only things that work are the accessories (radio, blower, bilge, etc.)

When I turn the key I get nothing, but if I hold it to start the gauge cycles, beeps and then says Engine Comm Failure.

Did I blow my ECM? I'm thinking yes.

If so, is this a swappable part or does it need initial programming by a dealer?

Thanks, I feel like complete crap right now.

I'm seeing on the parts diagram there are some fuses next to the ECM that I have not checked. I'm not hopeful but will check those next after it rains.

Thank you! I am going to give that a look and yes I am panicking!

Just checked the fuses. All are good, I even swapped the spares for the good ones to be sure. Still same behavior.

Are sure the throttle is in neutral and your platform hatch is locked down? Standard stuff but you never know...

yes, checked the usual: tether, throttle, rear hatch

I had a tether issue that kept mine from starting once. It got slightly pulled out of place and even when pushed back into place, it still wouldn't start. I had to completely remove and reinsert it before it would start.

I completely removed and reinserted the tether-- the boat started 3 days ago and I haven't touched the tether until now when troubleshooting.

Wow, that's weird. Seems like the fuse system should have protected the ECM. Hopefully, some of the electrical system gurus will chime in. Not really my bag at all, I usually end up hurting myself.

Are you sure you reconnected every lead to the battery. I remember reading a similar post a while back and 1of the leads decided to run and hide when reconnecting everything.

I'm waiting out the rain but I am starting to think about this more. I don't know how I jumped to the conclusion that it's the ECM when the boat won't even crank. Looking in the troubleshooting section of the service manual it's not even listed as a troubleshooting item for no crank.

Did you use a wire brush to get all that protective crap off the terminals

Yes-- and It's a dual battery setup and the starter won't crank in any of the three battery positions.

Take the two screws off the ecm cover to access the starter silinoid. Have someone turn the key and test to see if your getting 12vs. Is it clicking?

Two other things to consider for a non crank are...1. Is the throttle in neutral and 2. Is the kill switch clip properly seated. But if you have other things not working, then bad connection or fuse. But there are no fuses to protect a ground side of a circuit from getting fried. Trace that ground wire back to see where it goes.

Yes, I checked the fuses under the screw cap next to the ECM, those are the ones I mentioned checking earlier. It's thunderstorms right now so I am on hold until later but this is my "Triple Check Checklist" so far:
1.) Recheck all of the battery connections, make sure nothing is unconnected, make sure anything that was touched is inspected and tight
2.) Recheck all of the "start disablers": Neutral, Lanyard, Rear Hatch
2.) Check for continuity at the starter solenoid and check it's engagement to see if it clicks when the key is turned to start
3.) Recheck the fuses (again)
4.) Trace the ground wire back and see where it goes, is it fried?

Thanks so far for all the help. I wish it wasn't raining but I guess this gives me some time to build a good strategy.

I'M SO STUPID.

Thank you for all the help. This is fixed. I am extremely embarrassed but my own first post should have been all the info I needed as I was typing it. "I was rushing" and I missed connecting one of the ground wires. Thank you F.M. for the obvious, but critical observation.
