Hi! We are in the process of buying a 2016 scarab 195 200hp. Wondering if that's enough power? Everyone mostly has the 195 HO 250hp models and I can't find any information. What's your input? Ideally we would like 4-6 people and potential to pull a tube or skis. How do you find the ending runs given the horsepower? Any input would be helpful! Should we switch to 250hp or will we be ok with 200hp.... we got an amazing deal for the 200hp.

In my opinion the 250 HP engine has barely enough power for a 195. I couldn't imagine 50 HP less. Sacrifice the good deal and look for a boat with the 250 engine.

That's what is concerning us. Realistically when thinking about it 200hp seems like a lot of power. We were debating on a Yamaha sx195, but opted for the scarab 195 because of how comfortable it was inside. Biggest difference is the engine. Yamaha's was 180hp vortex, 4 cyl, 4 stroke, 16v

Both boats are great!
The scarab is available in 150 hp naturally aspirated, and either 200 or 250 hp supercharged.
Yamaha doesn't officially release horsepower numbers but the 1.8 liter naturally aspirated has 180 hp (the 190 models) and the supercharged 195 models now have somewhere north of 230 i believe. That could have been the now no longer made 192 models though.

Check out the model specific threads for more info on each model as this site just did a great release for the 2017 models!

How is the sound from the scarab 195? Is the engine super loud? I heard some
Boats with 3cylinders tend to have a micro vibration on the water and tend to be louder than the average engine.

I would say definitely 250.
With 4-6 people in the boat you will want all the power you can get in a single.

I've heard some people say the 250hp struggles a bit when pulling a ski. Realistically if we have 4-6 people with a 200hp or even 250hp. How fast do you think it would reach with both scenarios without pulling a ski or tube?

That will depend on a myriad of factors, but the only single engine jet boat capable of going over 50mph stock is 2017 Yamaha 195.
It has the amazing SVHO engine, adequate intercooler, and the 160mm pump. Of the boats you are considering, 200, 250 Rotax and SVHO all are supercharged and run better on premium fuel, 93 octane.

Personally, I would go with the 195 Yammie. Those SVHO engines burn a lot of fuel at WOT, but the whole boat is a beast and just phenomenally well designed, overall. It also comes pretty close to Scarabs in trim quality, the 2017 195 does.

@ScarabMike would know best!

If you get a 195 get the 250 engine. The boat even with the large engine is underpowered. If you can get the 215 with the twin 200 then do that. In my opinion the best Scarab has to offer is the 215 with the twin 250s. Its the best bang for the buck you can get. You can option a 215 without the HOI options, but with the twin 250s very cheap.

I have a feeling @Skirmante is finagling a very special deal over there at the boat show ;).

LOL. @Skirmante you can get a 215 with twin 200's for not much more than a 195HOI with the 250hp. The boat only weighs a bit more than the 195 so it will break the 50mph range with that combo. There are tons of leftover 215s with a tower that you can get a great deals on.

Like this leftover. This can be had for low 40s.

Yeah ideally I could do that but im poor lol! I can't dish out 65k on a 215 or 40k on a 195 ho. No way in hell. I'm already biting my fingernails over a 30k boat.

Life is so much easier with moolah, always. However, being half poor I have so much power. If I had my way I'd get a Baja and sip my
Cocktails. LOL!

We don't want a used one. Too many potential problems. Been there done that. Out limit financially is around 34k max. Which is why went between Yamaha 195 and scarab 195 with 200hp and ended up "buying" the scarab. OTD 30k new 2016. All the glitz and glamour included.

I would have got the Yamaha. Better pump and engine package for the money and no supercharger to rebuild. You can also run 87 octane. The Yamaha will also be loaded with options compared to the Scarab.

Right, if we were talking about 195 Yammie, that's pushing way over the limit here. But a 190 would be a solid choice.

In that case Scarab is not the way to go. They have had so many teething problems.

You would be so much better off with a used 230/240 if you want space and load capacity or a 190 if you have space constraints or want fuel efficiency. Any of these boats will be more efficient with fuel than the Scarab 195. A 230/240's best cruise is over 3.5 mpg and a 190 is over 4.5 while a Scarab 195 is less than 3 mpg. The 230 / 240 will top out around 50 and be able to tow easily with ten adults on board.
