I bought a new used boat this spring ... a 2016 242 Limited to replace the 2002 LS 2000. Truthfully while 3 years old the new boat was barely used so I was reluctant to have a bunch of drilling done to install a Garmin Marine GPS ($400 price range) like we had on the old boat. It did depth and gps functions like bread crumbs and tracks but beyond that we never used any of the other features. Also the install location on the old boat and the new boat were not ideal. Since the new boat had a built in depth sensor all we really needed was the gps functionality.
I had a fully cellular capable iPad mini that I wasn’t really using so I set that up with Navionics Boating app (paid subscription) on a Ram Mount with the cup holder base (I also tried the suction cup base as well but the location on the cup holder is better). I was not happy with the speed of cellular response while navigating so I added a Garmin Glo GPS receiver that connects to the iPad via Bluetooth (just like you pair a head set). I keep the Glo tucked under the rubber webbing of the ram mount. The response from the Glo is fantastic and I now keep the cellular data and WiFi off to make sure I’m getting only the data from the Glo.
Everything but the iPad came from amazon. Many thanks to the authors of the other threads on this topic ... nothing really original in my post.
