A very good question. Yes, front (in-boat zone) to rear (tower zone) fade is critically important.
In order for the HU to be useful as 'the' zone control it has to a) be mounted on the starboard dash at your fingertips, b) contain a pre-amp fader with at least two pair of RCA outputs , and c) have a fader that is not buried in the menu so that it is instantly accessible.
He can probably discern all this by just knowing the brand and model of the HU.
