Agreed, the question becomes how much intrusive inspection is enough or too much. If the bearings go bad over a long period of time it makes sense to inspect. But if they go bad quickly you have to be lucky with your inspection. Finally, what are the chances the inspection causes the problem. I guess I have no answers, just questions.
 
Inspection can cause problems, yes. If the oring goes in wrong it can cause water seepage.

My humble recommendation is to be in tune with the normal noise and vibration of the boat, and investigate early if something feels amiss. Whether that is a noise or vibration, or just a gut feel.

I think the cone inspection yearly is worth it if you can do it yourself. If you need to pay for it, it would depend on cost. I may skip a year or three if I had to pay for those...to ME... You do your thing and suffer your own consequences.

You can not repack those bearings like a trailer hub, need a puller and a press, it is a rather major operation.
From everything I’ve seen and heard those things do not grenade out of the blue, you will most likely be able to feel and/or hear something beforehand.

 
They cannot be repacked, but the gear oil or slurry can reach all the way to the rear bearings :-) the grease not so much, was my impression.
