Manhattan Boat Lift September 11th, 2001

This is the first first time I have heard the story of the boat lift that helped evacuate Manhattan. This video, narrated by Tom Hanks, tells the story of that boat lift. Take a few minutes and watch this video and remember what happened that horrible day, never forget or we may be doomed to repeat history.

There was a retired FDNY fire boat (her name escapes me right now) that had been purchased by a group of private citizens after her retirement and she came out of retirement to participate in the boat lift and ended up as part of a firefighting operation. Cool story, torturous time for all.

The name of the FDNY Fireboat was the John J Harvey, here is a link to her story. There is a children's book about the Harvey and her role in 911. Couldn't finish it without tears when I read it to my kids a few years ago. The book puts the entire tragedy into some perspective for a child to understand.
