Guys I have taken my boat out twice now for a couple hours each. Gently broke in and followed the manual break in procedure. Motors have 3 hours each on them. But everytime I pull out the boat and open the drain plug, I see metal shavings collected inside in there.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Is this normal?? What might be causing this?

Normal, most have that on new Yamahas - its just left over remnants from the manufacturing/assembly process. Screws, nuts, bolts, zip tie remnants, fiberglass shavings, metal shavings, chunks of fiberglass, etc. by the third time out and bilge draining I finally got it all washed to the bilge and cleaned out.

Oh thank god! I had all sorts of scary things running thru my head.. like piston grinding on the cylinder walls, engine detonation etc. lol. Yes you are absolutely right because I literally pulled out a metal washer from the drain plug! Felt almost like how doctors in third world countries leave scissors inside patients lol.. They dont tell you about stuff like this at the dealer. I think it's enough to put a good scare in new boat owners.

I have had this too. So much that it plugs up the drain hole. I put a glove on and got in there to try and fish the big stuff out and flush the rest. Most interesting thing I have found so far is a locking nut. That one makes me uneasy, haha.

if your feeling adventurous you could pull your cleanout tray and probably vacuum some of that out, it would also give you a good idea what's going on down there in relation to your drain plug vs. bilge pump and a chance to make sure all your cooling clamps are tight,

If you haven't yet be sure to watch the video in our FAQ about "how the cooling water flows" it's for the MR1 engine but the 1.8s are basically the same,

The next thing you will see is your exhaust port give birth to the leftover "silicone ring". That also is normal and part of being a new Yamaha boat owner. :D

LOL - yep just saw that sticking out of the exhaust yesterday and pulled it out - thanks to this forum I wasn't alarmed.
