After using the K&N-303 oil filters for eight seasons with no trouble I have been disturbed by a recent, informative posting by @OperationROL regarding oil leaking around the welded removal nut. I came up with similar complaints while reading several reviews on these filters. So...I'm looking to make a change. Let me know what brand & model filters you are using on your MR1- HO motors and a good source for them.

I use the yamaha oil change kits. Filter and oil. We don’t run enough hours for me to change out oil and filters but once annually.

Bosch looks nice and well built. That's what I have been using.

I have always used Yamaha filters on all my Yamahas including the boat. 2 of them are competition R6 race bikes. Pretty much all the road race teams use them, as does RIVA racing for all their watercraft.
They are always the way to go in my opinion.

K/N, I may or may not change, ROL can't remember if he used the nut to tighten. I could see if someone tighten with the nut it causing a leak, If we had any other regular members have this issue I'd be switching immediately.

As often as I'm opening and checking the oil (at least the start of every trip and often in the middle of a trip during "swimming" time), I'm comfortable with it.

I was thinking the same think about using the nut for installation. I just hand tight. My concern is some of the reviewers mentioned the K&Ns are being made in several different locations. China, Taiwan & Mexico were mentioned. Don't know if that's true or not. I may give them one more season as I also check my oil on every preflight.

Nothing wrong with the Yamaha filters. I do understand they no longer use fleece filter media. They must have run out of sheep.

I guess because Yamaha has changed their filter media we can now say Yamaha is no longer fleecing the boating public!

I used the K&N's for a long time on my last boat and Waverunners. After seeing the K&N recall for issues with the welds, I did some research and switched to these. Hiflo has been mentioned here by others, so maybe someone else will comment on their experience with them.
Also adding this quote from @swatski because the comment on OEM filter quality is relevant here.

Thanks @BoaTN. I like the idea of the hilo filters. Does anybody know which hilo filter works for the MR-1 HO motors?

The screenshot above is the model I use for the MR1 HO engines. I have them on a '07 and '08 Waverunner FX HO right now.

I remembered there was some change with the filter parts through the years. This seems like a good summary of what I found previously:

Last oil change the yamaha filters were used. I picked up some K&N's and will likely use those this upcoming season. I also keep an eye on my oil and engine bay as one of my motors has a slight leak. THINK I've narrowed it down to what it is.
