I have noticed on the 2016 24' boats that they have added the gas spring. I wanted one on my 2013 212ss.

I took out the old spring that holds the anchor locker open and added one. It works perfect
The spring is a 20 lb, 17-1/2" long (extended). It does not rub the ladder.
I also got tired of the twist and turn latch, and added a slam latch from GEM products. IMG_1580.jpg IMG_1581.jpg

Very nice. I like that!!!

Nice job I to will look add. Thanks for posting

These are the first things on my mods list for next year.

@Noko here is the latch and strut info
http://www.gemlux.com/catalog/2-5-Non-locking-Slam/5251-420-16MM
i called GEM to make sure of the backing plate size. 16mm is what you want need. They also make a 20MM (too thick for our boats)
the link is for the keyed latch. They also have a non keyed version as well. I figured i would want the lock at some point. Better to have it and not need it than wish i had it.
I do plan on adding the non locking slam latches to the clean out plug hatch.
the strut came from Overtons... it is actually 17" not 17-1/2" as stated on my first post. sorry if someone gets a 17-1/2" it will be fine

you will also need the standard 10MM mounting brackets for the strut. one flat and one angle i purchased from west marine, but there are many places to get these.

OK 190/192 owners...who wants to do the legwork on figuring out specific components to eliminate the $%@!&% spring for the glove box on our boats? :D

I did this last year. I love it too. Next step is to take the old spring and use it on the glove box. I think it should work better in that application

I'll be doing this as soon as the spring breaks (again). Thanks for posting this!

@MNdrifter that is exactly what i did... works great . i used some strong 2 sided tape that is holding up well... i will screw it in if i feel the need.

I really like the slam latches. They would be especially useful for quick access to the clean out plugs. Thanks for the suggestion.

Man, getting the boat out of storage tomorrow and the to-do list just got longer! Thanks!
(I wonder if the stainless option is worth it - at twice the $ - since we're in salt water...)

Looking on Amazon and EBay I found some keyed stainless options around $20.

@Bruce i did have to extend the bracket that the slam latches closes on on the anchor locker... i might have to do the same on the clean out plug hatch . i used a piece of a pvc cutting board to extend it out. i am sure it is possible to get a longer bracket, but my extension worked. let me know if you need a pic of what i did.

be careful that the cut hole size is correct.

This is one of the best mods I've seen lately!

Do you remember what size and length screw you used for the brackets? My boat is at the lake and wanted to pick up fasteners for this mod. Thanks!
