NMEA2k to NMEA 0183 Gateway Question

I am trying to hook my SIMRAD GO5 XSE to my Standard Horizon GX1600. The SIMRAD can only do NMEA0183 over WIFI and the WIFI receiver is really expensive so I am looking at a hardwried gateway converter.

This is the converter which I would have set to 4800 baud:

My question is can I just connect the above gateway directly to my SIMRAD NMEA2K port or do I have to install a backbone and terminator? I will never have anything on the network besides these 2 electronics. I am hoping to not only provide GPS data to my VHF but also to populate my AIS info in my display.

I am a rookie when it comes to this and every single schematic I see shows a backbone and terminator but several electronics tied into the network. Not just one.

I talked to tech support at yachtd and they explained I would still need a backbone and terminator. They are super fast to respond from a support perspective.

I believe the GX1600 only has an AIS transmitter, not a receiver. An AIS receiver would be required to populate AIS info on your display, I think.

Edit: I just looked at the specs on the GX1600 and I don't see AIS mentioned at all. Maybe you are talking about position polling, which the GX1600 does do. Position polling, however is completely different from, and should not be confused with, AIS.

Yes you are correct. I just got all my acronyms messed up. Because of the GX1600's capability I am just going to install a small GPS receiver dedicated to it so that my DSC works in a pinch.
