Does anyone know if some Yamaha models do not use wear rings in the pump Assembly, I have two 2017 Yamaha EX deluxe skis and after two seasons on the Saint johns and Black Creek it’s time for some new impellers so as I’m going through all the parts breakdown lists I can’t find any reference to a wear ring and the service manual says to measure the inside dimensions of the impeller housing and replace if out of tolerance again not referencing any wear rings. I haven’t measured yet but I hope they are in tolerances because they’re 144.00 a pop.

I don’t think waverunners of today have sacrificial wear rings. My 2003 and 2006 fx waverunners don’t, neither did my 2008 sx 230 or 2010 242ls. I’d be really surprised if Yamaha went back to putting wearing rings in anything newer. Instead the entire assembly around the impeller (part 4 in your screen shot, the impeller housing) is the wear ring. You can buy aftermarket plastic or stainless wear rings if you really want them. So far I haven’t seen of felt the need to add them to any of my Yamaha water toys. I have filled gaps in a jet boats impeller housing with a two part epoxy before, this turned out to be long lasting and inexpensive alternative to replacing the housing or adding a third party wear ring.

I switched out the impeller housings with wear rings on my old Yamaha boat. I liked them and much less $$$

Thanks for the information guys I went into this thinking that all jet drives had a wear ring, if you can indulge me to one more question when I look up rebuild kits to replace the impeller all the kits only have one bearing for the driveshaft but the assembly shows two, is it recommended to change both bearings or just the forward bearing ?

If you take the cone off and see no evidence of water intrusion or any damage to the bearings and everything moves/rotates smoothly you may not need to be replacing the bearings, just pack done fresh grease and put the cone back on, make sure the o-ring is in place.
Changing the impeller only usually does the trick. The SS wear ring built-in the wear ring pump segment rarely gets damaged to the point it needs to be replaced, unless it corrodes due to galvanic corrosion in salt.

So unless something obvious presents itself I should be able to get away with only changing the impeller and probably the oil seals and O-rings

I change my pump housings and use the ones with replaceable nylon wear rings , the original ones on your skies are part of the housing and you have to replace the entire section. But as stated if the ring is not obviously damaged you can continue to use them My 2014 Yamaha FX HO cruiser skies now have close to 800 hours on the original pump bearings etc but I did replace the wear ring sections a while back Not the impellers though.

Yes, change the impeller and clean/replace grease after removing the pump cone - that's all I would do unless there are issues with the bearings. The o-ring is at the base of the cone - it needs to be there and in good shape to prevent water intrusion. Other than that, the oil seals can only be replaced if you actually pull the bearings I believe.

Replaced the impellers yesterday, everything went smooth and looked good. The only thing that surprised me was the amount of corrosion and erosion on the impellers. This is after two seasons with about 135 hours in skinny water ( St Johns River and Black creek ) I guess I have to do a lot better job of rinsing after each run then I have been. 77F7977B-0D2E-478E-AA2D-8F1CF5310729.jpeg45019F6C-714D-472F-AE97-A1705CBCA2B7.jpeg

That actually makes sense, my son and I do a lot of power slides and then what can be only explained as a rooster tail at the end of it. Loads of fun and I guess totally worth the price of admission ha ha.

here is a thread on a face book page that you may want to read sand is your enemy with a jet boat even if it is just driving in water where the current is picking up sand as it will get in the engine cooling passages and it can cause serious damage , warped head etc. so just be mindful of it and rinse the engines really good after each use especially if you run in fresh water and do not believe it is required this may cause you to change your mind.
