One free day in Phoenix area what to do?

I have to work Dec 3 and 4 in Phoenix. I will come in Thur nite with a 17 year old kid and old lady, and have Friday free. Love the nature stuff like canyons and deserts etc..... with one day free....what do I see? I will have a car but don't have time to drive hours away.

If you are willing to drive 2 hours North, Sedona is absolutely beautiful and lots of hiking, trails, scenery, etc. to explore. If you want to stay in Phoenix you could hike Camelback Mountain, The Phoenix Zoo is pretty nice, or a short drive you could go see Lake Pleasant or Bartlett Lake. There is so many things to see and explore in Arizona, so let me know how far you might be willing to drive and I can give you some better options. If you are still thinking about Arizona as a retirement spot you might want to run up here to the Prescott/Prescott Valley area and explore, it's about 1 1/2 hour drive depending upon where you are staying.

When the wife and I were there this past March visiting friends one thing we did was the Desert Botanical Gardens. This is a nice combination of walking around in the outdoors and plenty of things to see.
