Trying to get some input if anyone is able help. If someone just bought a boat from another state and after getting the out of state title decided to sell it, would you be required to register the boat in your current state before selling it or could you sign over the out of state title?

A lot depends on the state you are in. Laws vary from state to state. Your best bet is to call the agency that titles boats where you are and ask them?

In IL I did this with a car once, more or less “flipped” it for profit. The issue here was time limit, I think the title had to be transferred within so many days of being signed. The title work is done by the purchaser, so as far as the state is concerned the person filing for new title bought it from the last titled owner, not you. Full disclosure, I'm no lawyer and title laws vary greatly state to state.

Is the new title signed by you or did the seller leave everything blank including dates? If so you might be able to pull that off. If not most states will have an option for you to title the boat but not register it to do the flip.

The other thing to think about is if the buyer getting a loan? Most banks will only issue a check to the person named on the title.

Appreciate everyone's responses. Thanks!

Check your states DMV website...that'll give you a good starting point for your situation.

I know it also depends on what the state titles. I live in KS and bought my boat from FL, the motors I guess are tagged in fl? I only had to register the boat but the only title work came down to the actual trailer.

It's called curbstoning. While a seemingly common thing, it is illegal.

In az, we register with Dept of Fish and Game, and it’s dirtttt cheap.

More than likely your state will want the sales tax from you and the other new buyer,,, government programs to fund you know..

This is where I lucked out, FL waived taxes if I registered in another state within 10 days, KS does not charge sales tax on boats if bought from out of state private sale through broker or personal. Saved myself a couple grand but lost a week driving.
