A friend brought along a cooler on our recent vacation that he made into a portable sound system . It was an instant beach party and I thought some of you might be interested in building something like this. This would be excellent for some of your beach houses and overnight trips. He estimated that it cost ~$700-$800 but you can vary the component costs as needed. This version was incredible sounding especially considering we were on a windy, ocean beach.

Here is a picture and he built the plan off of something from Crutchfield. Here is one of the links to Crutchfield for more information: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-jjBi50i6AOA/learn/custom-party-cooler.html

The system is water resistant since it is made with marine grade parts. This was a big hit at the Outer Banks

No wheels either... :)

Wow, the crutch field version is huge but at least you can still use part of it as a cooler. I like the one with the separate sub woofer.

Remember this one? $180 seems like a bargain comparatively.

Here is an interior pic of the one I built. but ended building one with a smaller marine amp, speakers and a battery powered water gun. With a 12v pwc battery and 4 Gpm wash down pump it will shoot a solid stream of water 30 feet or so and provide music for most of a large raft. In addition to rafting it and it's little brother have been used on fishing and camping trips, very convenient.

Here is a better pic of my rig as I was testing it out this morning while kid rocks all summer long was playing through the integrated sound system. Unfortunately their is a leak in the output hose (so it is only shooting about half the Normal distance and flooding the cooler), fortunately I discovered it in time to fix the leak before I plan to use the cooler this weekend.
