Stumbled across this upholsterer who was advertising his Yamaha work and I’d thought I’d share. I’ve been curious what new upholstery would cost so I asked his price as a barometer. For this interior he charged $3800. I see a few errant wrinkles but overall the work looks good. Thoughts?

I would say for that $$ it looks good enough. Yeah it's not perfect but as long as he uses quality material that's a great price seeing others have paid double what he charges.

cost me $3500

$3800 is very fair if using good vinyl. These fad colors are not readily available in a true exterior marine vinyl. Other than a few French seams being a little wonky, it looks good. Working on a boat now with similar colors.

Do you do this work professionally @Jlhtec? I have an old chaparral 1930sst that I’m thinking of getting redone or at least repaired. Thx

I think Scott recently had his done by the same guy that did mine in Houston. I think it was a bit lower in price for him, and it had less wrinkles. He charged $2700 for the boat, but I think Scott took out the cushions and reinstalled.

My top post, the installer used these products.

Me and my DIY job. Pretty much all of my wrinkles have smoothed out from some sun and heat, just a few left in the bow cushions that make that hard 90 degree turn, and they’re still slowly getting better. Since these pics were taken, I’ve installed a Big Air Cuda tower and Bimini, and will be installing Blacktip Elite traction mats sometime in the next couple weeks. She’s still in the process of her transformation...

you did this all yourself? Very impressive. Tell us about what you did - how long, how much $, how hard was it, how much of the existing seats did you use, where did you buy the materials, etc? Many thanks.

Yep, did it all myself. Here is the thread I made about it, I believe most, if not all your questions are addressed in here. It’s a challenge, and I’d recommend being extremely thorough about researching how it’s done, because by the time you buy everything you need, you're in too deep to just say screw it. Lol

Thanks. I’ll have a look. The boat I’m thinking of doing it on is a 1995 chaparral 1930sst. Motor runs great, need to cleanup up the hull but the worst part is the upholstery. Seems are splitting in several places and it’s pretty discoloured.

Sailrite.com is your friend, mostly for the sewing machine and their tutorials. Hundreds of DIY tutorials. Watch videos on how to do random other stuff also, like car seats, couch cushions, etc, because they touch on things that matter on this stuff too. Their vinyl is probably a better grade of vinyl, but it’s a lot higher priced than I got. Just don’t screw around and get a different sewing machine, hoping it’ll work. I am completely sold on their sewing machine.

Just looked on their website. Machine is $795, does that sound right? Did you buy accessories as well?

I looked on eBay just for fun but there’s nothing. I guessing when somebody buys this machine, they keep it.

Did you have to rebuild some of the bases? I know my swim platform is not in great shape, rest of the bases seem ok.

Here’s a couple of pics to give you a sense of what I’m dealing with...

Yeah $800 sounds right. I think I got a small discount, but not much. Maybe $50, if that? Just happened to hit a sale, as I recall.

I didn’t have to replace any foam, and all my bases are poly, so didn’t have any rot there. Your cushions look weathered, but I’m guessing if they have silk film in between the vinyl and foam, your foam is probably ok, unless plain old age has taken its toll. Just make sure to use the silk film and stainless staples if you do yours.

Thanks. They lasted pretty well for a long time and chaparral has a rep for top notch materials and fit/finish which I experienced. But my bases are plywood from what I can tell so I maybe to do repair work.
