Scarab 285!!

I am personally not interested in a wake boat because they are sooooooooo incredibly slow, hard to steer near docks, don’t handle rough water well (Centurian RI257 is exception) and are insanely priced. In addition, I love having no props or out drive to worry about when inexperienced boaters are at the helm (i.e. I want to surf with my own boat while my wife drives :))!!
Hmmmm... Most new wake boats are doing over 40mph just like our twin jet boats and can take on rough water very well, actually. Many are huge with high freeboard, in the last couple of years. No outdrives, either.

I'm a jet boat owner for a reason, but let's be real. Judged by Yamaha 275 offering, a 28' jet boat would require 3 supercharged engines to go even remotely close to 60mph... I'm not sure what size gas tank would be required to get a range of more than 50 miles under the circumstances. Personally, I would find it less than attractive.

And besides, Yamaha and Scarab "wake edition" offerings are priced on par with many mid level dedicated wake boats, last time I checked... Yamaha 275 is priced up there with high end wake boats.

--

No idea what larger sized wake/surf boat tops out over 40?!? Also not sure what twin engine jet boat you have but any Scarab or Chap with twin 250 horse package approaches 60 mph range...the twin 200’s get close to mid 50’s. I have a 2015 Scarab 215 HOI (twin 240)with dinged up impellers, trim tabs (Volvo penta interceptors)and cobra fins (all add drag) and it still hits 56-58 range with full tank and 2 people. A 2019 scarab 255 or chap 243 with the twin 300’s would be even closer to 60 mph’s. I don’t believe adding 3 feet of hull would dramatically cut down on the performance numbers unless they go to a wider hull.

Agree newer wake boats with deeper hulls ( I.e Centurian RI257) handle rough water better than in past but most of the others I have tested are fair to horrible at best...especially for a 150k+ boat. Centurian RI257 has msrp of over 200k (ad do many of the other large wake boats) I don’t believe 28’ (really 25+3’ platform) would be anywhere near that price point.

John,
i would love to see your pictures of how you mounted the trim tabs and controls. i thought it could not be done due to the cooling plates below.

Yes, I will send pics once I head back down to marina later this week. The Volvo Penta tabs is what I used and they work beautifully!! I can now trim the boat and drop the bow in chop.....this should be a factory option!! I was going to sell the boat because could not stand not being able to trim/drop bow in chop when I stumbled upon these tabs. I will send picks but they fit perfectly on the 215 or 255....not sure about 195 . I have a 215 HOI twin with 250 horse and made the boat dramatically better. The pad is installed on dash right under the keys so you can trim while keeping hand near throttle. Total cost was around 1100.00 and could add the automatic trim feature for another 500-600 from what JA remember. Here is the info:

Our customers report excellent results! Scroll down to see some pictures and comments.
The interceptor consists of a small retractable composite blade that is mounted on the trailing edge of the boat's transom. As the blade is lowered it generates an upward pressure on the hull, raising the stern and pushing the bow down. The system is designed for planing and semi-planing hulls with maximum speed of 50 knots.

Compared to the traditional trim tab that extends beyond the transom the interceptor has a lower profile and is less exposed to possible damage Traditional trim tabs often use exposed hydraulic actuators to position large tabs that protrude from the transom
The Volvo-Penta Boat Trim System kits come complete with everything needed to install the system – 2 x low profile Interceptors (either 300mm or 450mm), a Control Panel with 4 push buttons and two rows of LEDs for precise trim indication, a Control Unit (wiring manifold) – this is the brains of the system and is used for 1 or 2 pairs of Interceptors, 2 x 4-pole cables for connecting the Control Unit to the Interceptors and 1 x 6-pole cable (available in 5 lengths) for connecting the Control Unit to the Control Panel.
If you have more than one helm station, a T-cable is added and an extension cable is used to power the Control Panel and the second helm station. We are happy to help you design a custom system for your boat, please call at 866-209-6132.
There are two basic kits for single installation and one helm station, as well as separate components which are available in our web store.
PLEASE NOTE: The area of the transom where the interceptors are to be mounted must be straight, flat and smooth. If you have a question whether the BTS will work on your boat, email us pictures of the transom.
The Volvo-Penta Boat Trim System was featured in DIY Boat Owner magazine Issue 2005-4
The article includes a step by step installation on a 22 ft boat. The sea trail results were very positive and to quote the article “beyond our expectations”.
“This simple device improves boat-operating efficiency and handling safety. Boats plane earlier and more consistently and gain stability in cornering. With the proper trim angle there's also the promise of fuel savings. Enjoy the ride!”

Sizing Guidelines:
Many factors affect the choice of the right sized interceptors, and these sizing recommendations are based on average performance. Your choice may vary based on power, engine configuration, weight distribution, type of boat and use. The largest interceptors that will comfortably fit on the transom will be the most efficient. For semi-planing hulls, it may be necessary to increase the length of the interceptor configuration.
Please call if in doubt which size is best for your boat.

It looks like it's a blade that drops straight down into the water. Is that right? Never seen that before. It's like a brake. Does it slow the boat down? If only one side is down, how much effect on the steering? Interesting.

It works exactly like standard trim tabs except better!! They use these bad boys on yachts and commercial boats...they have been around for a long time but not prevalent in US for some crazy reason. There is also a brand called Zipe wake that work similarly but no idea if they would fit hull of Scarab. The Volvo Penta 300’s or TQ 300’s will work 100% and work incredibly well....I can plow water if a I want with NO ONE in the front of the boat!! So yes, the interceptor tab drops straight down and causes lift on that side of boat...as with any trim tab, there is drag associated so yes if you fully retract them the boat will loose some MPH’s and efficiency. I weight 200+ pounds and if I drive without s passenger the boat tends to pull....I tap the tabs and the boat corrects and I do not loose any MPH’s or very minimal. The main reason I purchased them is my boat would “porpoise” under certain conditions and it drove me nuts....fully cured with the interceptor tabs!!

I feel like I am a salesman for Volvo Penta ??? but that is how impressed I am with these and NO IDEA why Scarab doesn’t offer them as a factory option! They would sell a hella of a lot more boats!! I paid my dealer 500.00 to install but VERY EASY install.

I will send photos ASAP!

Here are the photos of the Volvo Penta tabs on my Scarab 215
what a great job on the install. this is great info. definitely my next winter project!

I checked out the pictures. Surely this is not a 255 hull with a 3' platform extension. Sure looks like my 255 with an add-on platform. Why not add an extended bow like the Reggie Fountain boats to make it a 31' footer.

I have a confirmation from a dealer that these are the pics that Scarab showed them of the 285 last year. They are testing it this month and will be presenting more info at their dealers meetings in September.

From the pics its looks like a 26 foot boat with an extended swim platform

Found this online. Says more info soon and looks like artist renderings, but it's better than nothing at all :D:thumbsup:

Scarab 285 linky
Thank you SoonerDustin! One thing about water sports being pulled on a short rope, that jet spray can really blast people. Having an extended platform would cut that spray down quite a bit like the Vortex Aerial Surf Platform series. Much more enjoyable ride.

I would buy a 28’ jet boat for sure if the power is in line and it continues to be a multi purpose boat!! The wake boat market is saturated and a jet could never compete with a true “wake boat” designed for the singular purpose of surfing/skiing.

Build the 28’ foot scarab with some modest ballast, maybe a wedge to help shape wave and don’t make the hull “one dimensional” for surfing and it will be a hit. A 60 mph 28’ jet boat that you can surf decently behind is achievable in my opinion. A 60 mph inboard wake boat is not a possibility...that is the appeal!!!

What is this one dimensional stuff?? I use my “one dimensional” wake boat the same as my “Swiss army knife multidimensional” jet boat with the one exception of salt water use. Not sure what boat you drove around the docks but compared to my Yamaha I can place my vdrive where I need it without wandering. I know BRP have the advantages over Yamaha in terms of bucket design but I find my vdrive highly maneuverable compared to my Yamaha. Instant response from steering input because water is actually flowing along the rudder. Wake boats aren’t propped to haul ass or go fast. They are carrying big props pitched for torque not speed. My Max rides 20x better than an jetboat I’ve been on as well. I mean it’s not a Cadillac but it’s not beating us up like our 192 did in the same rough waters we boat in on big open or deep lakes.

Doing 60-70+ mph on the lake all the time is for idiots in bass boats or PWC gnats.

I can understand not wanting a prop with inexperienced captains at the helm but let’s also not forget what happens to a rope around a jet...or a pebble, twig, etc.

Having that surf platform lower in the water than the Vortex boats should be an improvement from a wake standpoint also.

From Leonard at New Orleans Power Sports...

The all new 2020 Scarab sure stole the Show at the Scarab Dealer meeting in Cadillac Michigan! It’s 28’ leg th, 30’ with optional extended Swim platform was the main focus, but the design, features and wow factor was off the chart! The ride across a 2-3’ Sea lake even reinforced the good in this boat!
There is a long list of options and color choices but the nicely equipped hull #1 boat with the what is needed was more than any other jet before it. A starting price of $89,999.00 and a very nicely equipped tower package boat at about $99,999.00 and of course the all options in WakeSurf Edition boat at about $114,999.00. The WakeSurf Edition is going to be a real played in the Surf boat market with 2500 pounds of water ballast and SurfStream tabs! It’s going to be a fun BoatShow season! I’ll have this big beautiful lady at the New Orleans Boat Show February 14-16th and in the water in the following weeks for Demo! Come on down and bring your SurfBoard! Or you can barrow mine!
