Speaker Upgrade Suggestions

I have the same crappy stock speakers in my boat but I upgraded my head unit to the Fusion, 600. How do you like those speakers compared to the stock ones? I have pretty much the same boat as you.

Has anyone tried these 6.5" speakers from Monoprice as a replacement for the in cabin stock speakers?

They get great reviews, and someone even mentioned putting them in a yamaha. They also handle 80 watts RMS which seems like more than enough power, and at $25 per pair I think I might give them a shot.
I know the general rule is you get what you pay for but that has not been my experience with Monoprice. I'm not trying to be a commercial for them but I have the 5.1 channel premium home theater system with some added in-ceiling speakers and it will blow the windows out of my 16' x 32' living room. In year 3 on that system it still has the same quality as the day I got it.
I'm thinking of pairing these with a wetsounds HT-4 amp and using channels 3 and 4 to power a yet to be determined sub. I'm not an expert so I'd welcome any and all recommendations.

@JTC1016 Looks like they can handle only 80 watts max.

Maximum Recommended Amplifier Power 80W

I totally agree on the monoprice quality. I have had 2 in wall 5.1 surround systems from them and they are awesome!

@JTC1016 if that is the case then these could be a good option for stock speaker replacements.

Maybe I'll try them out and let the board know my results. I don't pick up the boat until April 27th though so I'm counting the days. I can't hurt myself too bad at that price.

I also noted in the remarks section that one person said the speaker covers "yellow" over time from the sun exposure. If that matters to you.

I did see that too. That probably would bother me over time. At that price I might risk it though.

You get really good advice here for budget choices, like with Polk DB651s for under $100 a pair that several members have used and recommended. Why reinvent the wheel? :)

You're absolutely right, I've already gotten a lot of great advice here. I just have WAY too much time to shop for the boat since I don't pick it up for about 5 more weeks. And monoprice makes great products so I thought I'd see if anyone on here had bought them. I love a good value so if there is a solid product for 1/4 the price, I'm interested.

The Monoprice coaxial is about as entry-level as you can get in a marine speaker. I agree, that with the cost of the Polk dB651 already so low, why reinvent this entry-level choice. The Polk uses a true dome tweeter which has a smooth response. The Monoprice uses a hard plastic W-dome which has a very erratic and peaky treble response. That difference alone is worth the price of admission.

You guys have convinced me... I'm going to go with better speakers. Now to shop subs and amps!

My new to me 2006 Sx210 came with the Aerial tower which had the double bullets with the db651's plus the stock 4 replaced with the same. Combined with a sub and 3 amps with the factory head unit, 2 batteries with switch and some can looking thing that has a digital number. No idea what that is.

Never the less - I've not really cranked it up with engines running but I have been playing it in the driveway while working in the boat.

Maybe I'm just expecting more but it doesn't sound all that great when I really turn it up. Could it be I need to tweak the factory eq each time since the battery is disconnected each time?? Or maybe the batteries are getting low? Side bar - do these yamahas have an alternator to charge the batteries?

I'd really love to optimize what I have (though I don't know for sure...)

One or more speaker does seem to crackle but could that be low power? How can determine blown vs power?

Lastly if I just want to replace for the sake of knowing but upgrade or the JL's the next step? I want it loud-er :)

@vxooxv you might have better luck posting a new thread for your boat. These boats have a smaller charging system not as much as a alternator. I think 25-28amps. Most with a stereo of larger size need a shore charger for the batteries as you will not charge your batteries back.

The number tube is a capacitor.

You may have blown speakers but how is amp hooked up? Just to the sub? Pictures, and your own thread will yield a lot better results. Sounds like a under powered by amps along with bad EQ tuning to me.

You're definitely going to want a charger. Also, capacitors have no real place in marine systems. The idea is to prevent voltage drops when the stereo draws high amps, but without a chassis ground, they really don't help. They can also be a source of noise in the system. Quality components and plenty of battery will deliver great results.
