Stuck at LAX due to ORD ATC Fire...

Was this a 'local' FAA facility or a 'center' type of facility that oversees all airspace in and out of the geographic area?

Chicago Center high altitude radar I believe. Significant impacts to Midway and O'Hare...

Center. When entering Chicago airspace they dropped us down to 15k and handed us over to local approach controllers. We were going into MKE so it wasn't a big deal.

So what would the normal back up procedure be to cover a center outage? Surely at least some of the functionality can be transferred to a secondary facility.

They are routing as much around their airspace as possible, but they cover a great deal of airspace.

The surrounding centers are assuming control of high altitude but it is at a slowed rate. Also, like someone said above if you stay low you can get through by talking to approach control. I think they said right now they are at 80% of normal volume

Where there is a will there is a way! We have done that many times to get home when the $#!+ hit the fan! I hate going backwards however. We once went from ORD to SNA to get to DFW!

Yep, I have done PIT-DFW-ORD. Long day.
