Towing AR240 and Camper with an Extension

Does your trailer have a folding tongue? Potentially you could just replace the portion in front of the hinge. Extending the wiring is easy and I imagine the brake lines would be simple for someone who familiar with them.

The trailer tongue is substantially larger than the hitch. I think it would handle the extension better.

Extending the tongue will still screw with the lever length and tongue weight won't it? I guess to a better (lower) number?

I was disappointed to see this on my F150 as well. Mine is rated 6000/600 and 12000/1200 Weight Distributing. It's a class III. Go figure. I guess they really want you to use the weight distributing hitches if you tow real weight with these! I don't even have an option for a larger hitch because it is already a "max tow" package and the bigger hitches don't fit that setup. I already looked into it for the boat, it is a very expensive setup in order to work with surge brakes. Only one company makes them that work with surge brakes.

I tried a hitch extension to decrease how far I had to back into a shallow ramp. I was really uncomfortable with it.

I also extended a 16' equipment trailer to 20'. It has worked great for several years.

Extending the tongue will change the tongue weight. Since it is a lever it should increase it slightly.

If you can find a stock F450 hitch somewhere it is the higher class weight rating and will bolt rite up to your frame, the frames are identical and you can use your extension. Should have no problem like its set up now, as long as you watch the toungue weight.

Extending the tongue will decrease the tongue weight (not accounting for any weight of the extension itself).
Extending the hitch increases the leverage of the weight applied to the end of that lever (tongue weight).

Maboat is correct. Extending the tongue will decrease the tongue weight.

I am way late to the party but wanted to know what you ended up doing? I am going to do the same thing, Dodge Ram 2500 with a camper (2000lbs) and a hitch extension on the back. Thanks, I am looking for advice.
