I noticed the nuts on many of the bolts on my 2018 OEM galvanized trailer are rusty. It’s interesting since the bolt itself does not appear to be rusting. I boat in brackish water sometimes but I would expect the nuts to be stainless. They look to be 9/16 nuts.

Any ideas on whether there are better options in replacing these and places to purchase?

The bolt in the picture appears to be a grade 5 carbon steel bolt FYI. Kinda too blurry to see the markings but the 3 hashes equally spaced means grade 5.

Look for a spray lubricant called Fluid Film. Works wonders on delaying rust. They'll still look like sh*t, but it'll delay out the process until you can upgrade your boat. :)

Rusty nuts on a galvanized 2018 trailer, I’m surprised. I know yamaha has to keep costs down but down to the price and quality of nuts?
I love McMaster Carr and just spent close to $300 with them (well $200 with them plus part of another $100 for shipping and handling, they send it fast) but for nuts and bolts the impatient part of me would go to Home Depot.

Honestly though, the galvanic corrosion issue is present with stainless OR mild steel, which is why his zinc coated bolt didn’t rust and the nut did. The rate is similar between mild steel and stainless, could just buy some plastic washers to put between. Or go grade 8 zinc coated everything.

I’m not sure why everyone else doesn’t have this issue or maybe they do .... this is a 2018 OEM galvanized trailer.

Hard to say really, I have a painted trailer so I can’t comment from personal experience but these Shoreland’r trailers in general are pretty unimpressive in my view. I’ll be replacing mine with aluminum once this one is no longer serviceable.

I've never seen an aluminum boat trailer before - lots of aluminum utility and snowmobile. That would be interesting!

@bronze_10 and others have them and they look awesome. I think some said they paid $3,500 for theirs but it was a few years ago. 7F30FA34-BFEA-4556-B4C0-203A0174084E.png

This is why our aluminum dock has stainless bolts and aluminum nuts. It surprised me to learn this when buying components from my dock dealer. The trailer MFG may have done the same thing. This is not a Yamaha issue, they don't make trailers. And they usually pass the blame for issues on to the trailer MFG.

I deal with Stainless steel piping, Flanges, Bolts, nuts everyday where I work. If something goes wrong there are very catastrophic consequences and loss of life.
