Sorry I'm late to the party - as usual, I hope you found accommodations you like.

I would have suggested the south bay area personally since I live in Redondo Beach and am familiar with what it has to offer.
There are a number of trendy boutique hotels in Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo that many of my friends and relatives have said good things about.

Nevertheless, I do suggest an afternoon on the strand or one of the piers to soak in the Southern California beach scene.

Getting to and from LAX is a breeze from the so bay as well. Hope her trip works out well and she has a great time.
