thinking about doing inside storage this winter. Have just done outside with shrink wrap in the past. So, on a local FB group, someone asked the group for recommendations and a few guys posted back saying they have buildings and offer storage. Through e-messages, I got a price of $200 from one guy. My marina as a comparison charges $650. My wife the cautious one says, what do you know about this $200 guy. And all I can say is he is on a FB group with me. So, not blood brothers by any stretch.
So, when looking at a private party for storage, what type of questions do you ask?
do they need to be insured?
do you get references?
do you take time to go out and look at the place before committing?
anything else/different?

I am going to call around and get quotes from other places. Just looking to see what questions you guys would ask.

I would definitely go look before committing, I have mine in a covered storage at a storage facility, I would rather have it indoors but being under a cover was a good compromise with the price. I see a lot of old farms around this area that have huge buildings with nothing in them, doors are open on some, I would love to keep it in one of those, but I'd only do it if I have access to it at anytime I wanted, also depended on what else was stored in the building, cleanliness, security and such.

I would think people would be hesitant to have other people's property stored like that because it is a liability for them as well.

I'd say that's incredibly hight priced for inside storage. Out here in Cali, I called and received prices in the Sacramento area for about $140 and up for professional storage lots that are secured 24/7. In the Bay Area, the one I called charges $300 per month.

Since your boat is insured, any damages would likely be handled by your insurance carrier. I'd go look at the place and check it out and get a feel for it first before committing. If it's going to be stored in someone's barn, look around for how mice may be able to get into it, see about how you go about retrieving it, and so forth.

Your current boat insurance should give you fire & theft off season but double check. My big concern would be pests like mice, rats, squirrels & raccoons. If the place isn't reasonably tight that could be a concern. You may be able to put some deterrent around if the owner doesn't have pets roaming around. Aside from the previously mentioned access & electricity would be a plus for any after season repairs or mods.

Here is the email and contact information on where I keep my boat during the winter. Basically October - April. The timing they choose to accept and remove is when the cave area has the least amount of moisture so mildew is not an issue. However I still use a couple DampRid set in buckets on my boat during this time.

Thank you for considering KUSI as a storage option for your Yamaha! Fees are $3.50/linear ft. per month with a one-time per season processing fee of $35.00. You will need to call to schedule a time to store the boat and that can be done by calling or texting me on the cell phone number or my DID provided below. You can e-mail, but I respond more quickly to a call or a text. We operate on a first come first serve basis and space is never an issue. The period you've chosen to store your boat is pretty normal among our customers, everyone likes to get that last fall run when the leaves change!

As noted on the website, temperatures are a constant 58° F., so winterizing is not necessary. We are located in a limestone quarry, vehicles and boats are stored approximately 800 ft. from the entrance, so the facility is extremely secure.

An escort will take you to the storage area and you will actually park the boat. If you'd like to schedule a visit, please call and we can make arrangements. Please contact me with any other questions you may have.

Thank you again for considering KUSI as a storage option,
