Neighbors 3yr old found my detailing supplies in the garage. THANK GOD he's not hurt and didn't drink anything. First and foremost that is most important, and I'll be changing where I store this stuff starting immediately.

He did however spray the back of our boat and new SUV with Wheel Cleaner. Armor All brand in the silver bottle.

Working on cleaning it off the SUV now. Appears to be going away with a gentle wipe and copius amounts of water.

Do I need to drag the boat out of the garage and spray/wipe it down too?

Here's the label.

I would wash it off. Probably will not react with gelcoat, but better safe than sorry.

As it's dried I've found it all over the side, and back of boat. Trailer has quite a few spots. Leaving a walk chalky spot. Appears to rinse away with a light wipe and lots of water. Definitely took the wax off the new car, doesn't appear to have damaged the car, boat, or trailer.

Overall looks like no major damage. Really glad the boy is safe and not harmed. I can't imagine the guilt I would've had over something like that.

I'll report back in a few days once I see if any real damage appears. Neighbors are super apologetic, offered to do whatever it takes to make it right.

I bet after a good rinse it will be nice and clean with no noticeable effect,

3 year old wandering into your garage ? I have had cats sneak in but never an unsupervised kid spraying chemicals the parents are lucky he didn’t grab the sprayer and squeeze the trigger when it was pointing in his face rim cleaner in the eyes ouch. Where the parents horrified ?

Yea, we're all VERY lucky it wasn't worse than just some cleanup. We've all done a sweep of the garages and moved chemicals up out of little hands reach.

Basically our street has 5 houses on one side that back up to a large field. We're in house #4 with 2 boys (18mo, and 8yrs). House #5 has 2 boys (3yrs and 7yrs). House #3 has 2 gilrs (11yrs and 22yrs), House #2 has 1 boy (9yrs). ALL of the parents and kids were in the back yard watching kids run around. This is pretty much a nightly "thing" between dinnertime and dark here. The older ones are driving power wheels and running circles around the house, while the younger ones play on playsets, with toys in the grass, etc. The 3yr old has a power wheels as well, and will often follow the bigger ones around the houses. Typically not a big deal. Realized the 3yr old hadn't made his lap in the appropriate amount of time so we went looking. Found him in our garage with the wheel cleaner "helping" to clean the boat, suv, and back wall of the garage.

Wheel cleaner was in a 5gal bucket with the rest of my detailing supplies. Bucket was under the work bench, hidden behind jack stands, jack, oil dry bag, and oil extractor. Guess those didn't look like fun to him. All the chemicals have been temporarily locked in the basement storage area, with new shelves being built this weekend to keep these things out of reach of the smaller kids for the forseeable future.

We removed his soaked shirt, and hosed him down quickly. Made sure he knew he wasn't in trouble and asked repeatedly if he drank any of it. He says he didn't, and there wasn't any on his face or head. We monitored him for a few hours, and kept filling him with water (as much as you can force a 3yr old to drink anyway) as per directed by poison control center. All the parents are good neighbors and friends, so we were just as worried about the little guy as they were. Once the kids were in bed, they came back out (we usually sit on the back deck and unwind at the end of the day) and apologized profusely. I'm not worried about it even a little bit, and not upset at all. I'm really just glad he's not hurt.

Moral of the story here......keep chemicals up and out of reach, regardless of how well you watch your kids, or how well you think you have those chemicals hidden. He wasn't out of sight for more than maybe 2 minutes, if that, and this could have had a MUCH worse ending than just some scrubbing and cleaning of vehicles.

Wheel cleaner is an acid-based product, so I’d worry about it more on metal than fiberglass. They typically design those products to be “idiot proof” enough that it won’t harm painted surfaces unless you deliberately use it inappropriately.

That is super awesome, what a helper!
I find the way you guys handled the situation very impressive.

I bet you this one is "pH balanced" so not acidic or caustic (alkaline), which is very fortunate in those circumstances.

Also - great thread, good reminder!

“Strong enough for a man, but pH balanced for a woman...”

I digress

Just occurred to me that I didn't mention the "fix" so far.

Basically I took the hose in the garage and washed down anything the cleaner got on. I moved boxes/wood/porous items off the floor, and the rest got a good hose down. Wiped down the boat/trailer/SUV with a micro-fiber while neighbor #2 held the hose with a light spray on the area I was cleaning. Once the boat was washed down (SUV was pulled out into the driveway), I sprayed down the garage floor, washing from back to front and spraying everything out the front of the garage. Then put fan on everything to dry out. We're fortunate that the garage has concrete about 12-18in high around the perimeter, and it's sloped slightly towards the door, so a full "wash down" was possible, with only a little bit of the drywall getting wet. Drywall in the house is garbage anyway, so a little moisture on the surface there doesn't bother me even a little bit.

Will be keeping an eye out for the next few weeks in the effected areas for any permanent damage. Will be washing the SUV with Dawn Dishsoap tomorrow, and re-waxing once it's verified clean.

My kids are 6 and 8 but there is a still a someone with a 3 year old mentality in the house, my cleaning crap is all up

My youngest is 12 so it's easy to get lax with what you leave lying around. (Not that I'd ever do it on purpose, but I'd trust either of the boys to clear a firearm left on a table.)

The problem is, little kids can pop up unexpectedly (there's a reason people compare them to gnomes). It could be friends, relatives, relatives of friends, or friends of relatives.

This is a good reminder to police up chemicals, tools, or anything else you wouldn't want little kids (or household pets) getting into.
