why are the Yamaha jet engines so loud ???

I guess it comes down what you are comparing the sound too. Compared to my oil burners: the Blaster, the Superject or even the Wave Runner the boat engine is quiet.

I bought one of those 4-packs of Orange life preservers at West Marine when I first got the boat. I realized I could jam it far into the back compartment on the starboard side under the seats and it absorbs some engine noise. Now I just have to get one for port side and jam it back past the batteries, I never use that space anyway. They should really soundproof the engine compartment, its a shortcoming but I have gotten used to it.
