Hopefully to find some answers here as I haven't been able to acquire much info from the dealer or from Yamaha. I am new to jet boating as I have been around primarily outboards my whole life.
I was out fishing and when I went to start the engines to head in the Port Side engine wouldn't turnover, no click, no nothing when turning the key. I looked around under the helm for blown fuses etc. at no prevail. I idled the boat in at "NO Wake" back to the boat ramp on the starboard engine (couple hour ordeal) and immediately took the boat to the dealer to look into. Never once after idling in did I try to turn the port side motor over, and I informed them that I had idled in on the one motor solely to protect the port motor from hydro lock if water had intruded the cylinder and to not start until diagnostic was completed.
Since being dropped off 6/28, I have received a work order that was sent in to Yamaha (Y.E.S.) stating Starter was seized, tech bypassed the starter and started the engine, tech stated "Engine started ok" that Diagnostic Test and Cylinder leakdown test was performed #1- 32% C.C, #2- 28% C.C, #3- 19% C.C. / Tech removed valve cover and found the gasket had failed internally, Tech removed cams and they were flattening due to internal oil leak.
The dealer failed to submit my YES service plan when I purchased the boat back in April. They have since submitted a YES contract to them (on 7/8) with a contract initiation date after the date of occurrence/failure. Yamaha of course denied the warranty claim due to the dates not aligning. The dealer is stating it will be my responsibility to cover the 6300$ for the repairs listed above, or to cover on insurance, and is saying that Yamaha denied the claim due to water intrusion into the cylinder. I have received absolutely no real documentation on, cause of failure from the dealer and have been led to believe this whole time that they see no reason as to why Yamaha wouldn't stand behind this and be covered under warranty so the 6300$ repair bill they are now stating I am responsible for was very unexpected.
Since the denial of the original warranty claim being sent in the dealer has since sent the head over to another shop to have a pressure test performed on it
I guess my questions are;
Firstly, is it really that easy for a down motor to ingest water into the cylinder? I literally idled it in, as I had come across many threads on here stating to "Do not go over no wake if coming in on 1 motor is the only available option"
Secondly, has anyone ever been in any sort of a similar situation with a dealer on a manufacture warranty claim, if so what is the best way of getting any information from them or from Yamaha.
