I have a 97 Yamaha 40EJRW (is what is on tag) I need to know the horsepower at the motor. I have looked everywhere. They say it’s a 30% decrease in horsepower. Not sure if this is at the motor (so I can order parts for) a 40, 50 or 60. It is a 3 cylinder 2 stroke. Tag on top of head says 820315

Its a 40hp engine so you order for that. A simple google search found the info in seconds.

When I bought it the guy said it’s a 60/40. So would this be a 40/20?

Guy at the marina said it was a 40 at the jet but 60 at the head. I don’t know what to believe

I dont understand what you are referring to. If it is a 97 Yamaha 40EJRW then order parts according to that, regardless of what you are told. The tags on the outboard and the vin number tells your complete story.
When i order parts for an outboard i go my those numbers. That way you get the parts correctly.
Dont be hung up on what the hp is at the block or prop
If its a 97 Yamaha 40EJRW its a 40hp, as for where that is measured i have no clue.
But usually any advertised hp rating on any engine regardless of the type is measured at the crank
