Hi,

We blew a hole in our boat engine and the only replacement I can seem to find is through SBT. Unfortunately, they wont sell an engine without a core, and won't take ours with the hole. I've read that some of the jet skis have the same engine as our boat and that may be a cheaper route to go... can anyone verify this?

Specifically if this one would work for our 2006 sx230 (non HO)? Or can suggest a different shop/place we could get a replacement motor?

Thank you!

How'd you blow a hole in the engine?

If you have most of the engine intact, worst case you should be able to swap any parts over needed to convert.

Will a wave runner engine work in a boat? Yes
yes, as long as it’s the same type of engine. There are a few different versions of MR1 engines.

Heres what I did when I transplanted mine.

I went to an online parts store and compared pretty much every part number from my year, model boat engine to that of the donor engine coming from a wave runner. What I found was that every part from the bottom up had the same part numbers EXCEPT the intake cams. So I took a chance and swapped engines anyway (I figured that worse case scenario I could always swap the cams later if it didn’t run right).

The engine runs great. However, I can hear a slight “lope” in the engine when it runs. Nothing that anybody would even notice. Probably nothing that I would’ve noticed had I not looked up the part numbers and been aware of a difference. Definitely not worth swapping out the cam for.

So, my advice to you would be to look up the parts online and compare. Second, find the history on the engine you’re looking at. Is the difference in compression readings a concern?

Good luck, keep us posted On what you decide To do.

Take a look at the fine print. The $2k likely does not include the core-charge, which could end up costing you another $2k.

It might be best to find a donor jet-ski with the correct engine, or find a long block for sale on EBay.

Edit:
Didn’t realize the link was for an EBay engine, just assumed it was from SBT...
