The wife mentioned that we needed a new mantel for our fireplace. So since I've been wanting to try out Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi for a while now, I thought this would be the perfect time.

I used 3 cedar 4x4s for the mantel. Got them planed down to the thickness that I wanted, and then got started burning away. I'm not finished yet and won't get another chance to work on it until next week, but I think it's turning out pretty good.

Starting the burning.

Fully burned on one side.

Started to brush. Decided to do a heavy brushing on it.

I'll post some more pics when I get further into it. I haven't decided if I'm going to add any stain or just clear it. The burning and brushing really brings out a nice heavy grain in the wood.

Ooooo. Looking good. I'm a big fan of burnt wood look. Did my whole garage.

That looks awesome. I think I'm going to have to invest in a larger torch.

That's what I'm using too. I think I might run by harbor freight and pick one of these up before doing the other side.

Propane Torch

Just finally got time today to finish the burning and brushing, and get it stained. Hopefully it will be warm enough and dry enough Sunday to get some poly on it.
