Ran the boat for an hour with no issues. Went to restart and nothing. Just the starter spinning. Towed her back. Thought it was a bad starter or voltage issue. Replaced the starter, relay, battery and no change. When I had the starter out I could spin the gear in the crank housing. I don't know much about boat starters but this doesn't seem good. So starter works. Spins but it is like the gear isn't attached to anything anymore. What could this be? It is a 2016 FSH 190

I believe there is one way sprag in the gear housing. If that failed the gear will move both ways. It you can spin the gear both ways freely than its gone. It should lock up one way.
If gone you neep to pull the front cover off, and the flywheel would need to be removed to inspect further. From the parts diagram it seems this would be the most likely culprit

Thank you. Yeah the gear moves freely both ways. This is the one I'm talking about in the pic.

@Nctinter. I dm’d you also but wanted to see about a follow up! Same issue. What was the fix? Was it the one way gear? Able to swap out yourself without pulling the motor?

@ChaseSven I am having the same issue. Were you able to resolve your issue?
To resolve your issue you need to replace the starter sprag/clutch. I sent a picture of the part that is needed in your other post about this. If you dont have the ability to move the engine forward, remove the rear cover, and the tools to remove the coupler then you need to take it to a shop to fix

@Neutron Thanks for your response on both threads. This is the information I needed. I was leaning towards taking it to a shop based on your other response. Before making that decision I wanted to research everything on the forum to find additional information on replacing the starter sprag/clutch. I also reviewed this in the service manual. There isn’t much on the forum for this particular repair. It seems pretty involved so the shop seems like my best option. I was feeling confident about changing out the starter, but this is more difficult repair. Thanks for your help!

I would sadly have to take it in. Another related question though making me think it could still possibly be electrical still. In my ActiVision my INO2 (stbd ign) sensor is reading 0.00 prior to hitting start vs the port side reading 8.69. Doesn’t seem like a manual sprag/clutch gear should give a reading. The pic below shows my readings on ActiVision. Batteries actually are reading higher off a meter than listed below. Port side starts right up without issue.IMG_1178.jpeg

Your video you posted while short. Sure sounded like a stripped sprag. Regardless of whatever that screen says, you have a mechanical problem.
Post a longer video or it cranking if you can
