The hardware yamaha puts in our their boats is absolute crap. In places that are susceptible to moisture in the engine compartment down towards the bilge they put shit metal clamps, meanwhile in other areas of the engine compartment and rear transom they put nice stainless steel. Makes no sense. This past week I spent a few hours swapping out all the shit corroded clamps yamaha put in my 2013 AR190, and let me tell you, it was not easy. Trying to remove some of these clamps was nearly impossible, as when I touched them, they would just break apart. And in such a tight space like the engine compartment, finding the ability to get my hands and tools in certain areas was not easy in order to have enough room to pull the hoses off.

However, after a few hours working on this project, I managed to swap out most of the clamps. There are still 4 clamps that I can not reach, so I am just going to have to leave them. Two I can see, but there is just no room to get my hands or tools in there, and the other two are directly underneath the engine, right were water would pool if you get any water in the bilge, such a terrible spot to not have stainless steel hardware. I would have to remove the entire engine to get enough room to get under there to have any room to work.

I would recommend doing this yourself if you have not done so already. Was about $30 in stainless steel clamps from local hardware store, and now good as new. All in all, I replaced about 15 clamps throughtout the engine compartment, and the transom area.

As you can see in the photos, the hoses for the cooling system were the worst as they sit low in the compartment and are more susceptible to getting wet. Even clamps on top of the engine compartment were corroded that do not even get wet directly.

Nice work. I did the same last year. For future reference in case you had a hard time removing and installing the rubber hoses, use (coat the surfaces with) liquid soap, it makes the job a lot easier.

the slots on your clamp screws need to be aligned.

Do you boat in salt water? Those clamps were in rough shape

Nothing new there, mines a 2016 and similar problems

A salt environment will eat up stainless. Best thing is to rinse the engine compartment down. It will prolong corrosion from getting bad fast.

Agreed, salt water practically eats up anything it comes into contact to, but the original clamps yamaha puts in there are not stainless, and get destroyed far quicker than anything stainless steel would. Some of the clamps in there are stainless, and they are still in great shape. Why yamaha would install some that are stainless, and others that are not is beyond me.

I only boat in salt water, too. You might want to periodically spray down the engine compartment with Corrosion-X or some similar product to protect everything. It also works well on the console's electrical panel and other places.

When you buy stainless clamps, some are completely stainless some are not. Make sure you get the ones that the tightening mechanism is also stainless. EB22A8A6-66DE-47EA-BECE-38537C51E81D.jpeg

yeah i believe my tightening mechanism is stainless as well. on the clamp mechanism itself it says "all stainless" etched on it.

I just bought a brand new 2020 AR210, I wouldn't mind upgrading them right now if needed. But is there any other way for me to tell if a clamp is stainless or not?

Spray it with salt water and wait a week. Lol

Use a magnet. Real stainless steel won’t work with a magnet.

I was kind of wondering that... which is why I asked, but I couldn't remember if it was stainless steel or aluminum where that was the case.

FYI...The 300 series of S.S. of non ferrous alloys, 304, 316 are non magnetic. The 400 series of S.S. 410, 416 is ferrous and magnetic.
