Yamaha VX Sport 2009 intake Troubleshooting

My Vx Sport Pwc is having an issue where the temperature warning is coming on at seemingly random times during riding, and where it is operating at ten mph under its usual speed. It runs without giving a warning while hooked up to a water hose, does anyone have any advice for troubleshooting?
