I have a 2013 F150 5.0 that crapped out on me yesterday. The transmission has been acting weird the past few weeks and recently gotten much worse. The most concerning thing it has done is while driving along at speeds of 40 mph the speedometer would drop to 0 and the truck would downshift to 1st slamming it in first gear barking the tires and sending the rpm's through the roof. Also, at times it would remain stuck in 5th gear at red lights and almost impossible to move. It went in to the dealership yesterday to be looked at, so waiting to hear back what they find. I have done some research and this seems to be common in the 11-12's and now appearing in the 13's. From what I have read on forums and other places it is the speed sensor/lead frame inside the tranny. It's scary when it happens, and thank god it hasn't done it while pulling out on to the highway or interstate. Anyone f150 owners here experienced this?

That could cause a serious accident if pulling your boat on the interstate! Downshifting into 1st while running 70mph while towing would probably put your boat in the bed of your truck. Definitely make sure this is fixed by your dealer.

Ha let’s hope not. Salesman at dealership already tried to talk me in to trading for an ‘18. I said nah. My ‘13 only has 55k miles and almost paid off. Hopefully keeping this one for a long time!

You can snag a '18 Ram for 30% off. The 8 spd transmission on those is arguably the most reliable transmission on the market. Of course if it's under warranty then I would just get it fixed and hope it doesn't happen again.

It's under warranty, but I am running a tune so it's probably going to void the warranty. I'm pretty sure the tune isn't the culprit though since Ford did issue a recall on 11-12 models for the same issues. 30% off sounds like a great deal, but not much of a Dodge fan. They may be good mechanically, but not fond of their styling. I got my eye on the diesel F150 with 10 speed tranny that was developed with GM once it has been out a few years.

If you haven’t already check out you tube for tips and tricks on diagnosin, fixing and/or putting a bandaid/work around in place until you have time and money to bring it back to factory specs.

The f150 has been the best selling truck in the us for many years now and it has the same 5.4 liter triton engines and transmissions as the expediton and Lincoln Navigator.

I only suggest you tube because my new to me Navigator is having some problems and I found a lot of videos on you tube helpful. A few go into state what to do/disconnect to get the vehicle running and keep the vehicle going in an emergency. For instance detaching the o2 sensors on the manifold to keep the engine from going into failsafe/limp mode, the check engine light will come on and stay on and the vehicle won’t pass smog but it will get you home.

Can you return it back to stock? Legally they have to prove your tune caused this. If they can't, then they have to fix it.

yes I can, but did not have time to before dropping it off. I should of removed the tune weeks ago, but of course I didn't.

Got truck back today. Dealer replaced the lead frame in the transmission. Apparently there is a recall on the 2011-2012 models for this particular part, but not the 2013's. It houses a speed sensor that is defective and the truck computer does not know how fast it is going so it doesn't know what gear to be in. This causes the truck to abruptly shift in to 1st gear while moving at high speeds. Luckily warranty covered or would of been around $1,200.

speaking of gears and F150s has anyone noticed the wheels "locking " or having a grinding noice when the vehicle is shifter to 4H?

Edit: it is important to notice that this happens only in tight turns....

Yes you are binding the front wheels against the rear. If you have 4A there is a torkconverter acting as a differential between the front and rear that is locked in 4H. In wet conditions you shouldn’t notice it as much. Hope that makes sense.

Well luckily mine only did this at speeds of 30-40 mph. It was very aggravating though. I love this truck and hope this is only a small issue in the life of the truck.

Yes mine does this in tight turns also. Never really run in 4x4 but when I do I have noticed this.

Not even a question man. Not bashing Rams at all because the new ones look good but dang I love my F150. Which one are you running now? I may switch over to the 3.5 Eco next time around. I don’t know though because I have the 5.0 now with the Corsa sport exhaust and it sounds mean as hell. I know the eco has more power but I can’t get enough of the V8 sound under power.

I have 2017 3.5 eco and never feel I need more power, just stock
With eco you won’t get that sound your 5.0 makes
I traded my 14 about 8 months ago to pretty much to take advantage of the new electronics
Night and Day - the touch response is so much faster and better and with apple car play you don’t navigation
My truck came with navigation in the lariat package but don’t use it
