Are you buying a lake house on Allatoona? Or just moving to the area? I have watched the market over the past few years and lake property is very expensive due to the fact the COE doesn't issue new dock permits, so what is out there is very valuable. I lived in Acworth for 8 years before moving further south to Marietta. Traffic is a huge pain in the @$$ if you need to commute towards Atlanta. It was the whole reason we moved.
Yes, buying lakefront with deeded dock. No commute to worry about thankfully.

Nice! I tried to talk to my wife in to it but she just wasn’t having it for how little you get for your money if you want to be on the lake. We got a new construction custom home on a basement for what a cabin on the lake would cost lol. What part of lake will you be on?

We are ditching NY and heading to GA in the June/July timeframe. Going from a 4 month boating season to an 8 month boating season. . . . CAN. NOT. WAIT.
Join is June 29th for gathering...

Lake Lanier is better but only cause I'm there.

wife and I were looking for houses and found one to fit our need 2 years ago on lanier.. spoke to COE and they said waiting list is about 15 years if you put in application today.

It's all about money. One of my customers got a permit in 3 months and was allowed to clear trees on core property but he had to have riprap installed... 100k later he has no trees between. Patio and lake.

So the wife and I believe Phoenix area is where we will resettle next year.. probably try and fly down during spring break and take a quick tour.. ideally try and line up new jobs, sell the house here and ideally buy new house or close to new... this is going to be very challenging to say the least

I just checked we would have to apply for Arizona RN license.. non of the west coast states participate in “compact nursing states”.. figures..

I love living in AZ. We have plenty of lakes and rivers to put the boat in. The weather is good, and the cost of living is low. The Gov is making occupational licensing transferable between States too. So if you're licensed in your state it will transfer to AZ.
We r gonna make a trip down memorial week to drive around and get a feel for the different parts of Phoenix.. any areas to stay away from would be appreciated..

No idea. The closest I get to Phoenix is Glendale for Hockey games and Cabelas. I live down in Yuma. I know there are some areas you definitely want to avoid, I'm just not sure where they're at. Glendale looks like a nice enough area though.

I think the list of where to go is shorter than areas not to go...Peoria and Surprise are nice and close to Lake Pleasant. Most areas north of Union Hills are nice. North Scottsdale, Carefree, Anthem, Cave Creek, Paradise Valley, downtown Phoenix, Biltmore District (and some of the historic districts around there, although there are some crummy places interspersed around the historic districts), Tempe, newer parts of Chandler, Gilbert, and Queen Creek. Gold Canyon is gorgeous but out there a ways.

Just like any city or suburb there are going to be parts of each to avoid but top of the list I would say are Maryvale and south Phoenix.

That is very helpful indeed.. much appreciated as we will be renting a car for the week and touring as much as possible.. I realize every city has it’s not so great areas to be late at night and I generally keep my head on a swivel anyways. We are so excited to see Phoenix and the surrounding areas .. thanks again as any info is welcomed..

Well, the wife and I have had enough of 6+ months cold/rain and looking at relocating next summer.. I would prefer somewhere i can have a pool and actually use it Year around.. not a fan of humidity, hurricane warnings or big flying bugs.. I’m thinking southwest somewhere (absolutely not Cali).. I was raised in San Diego as a kid.. I am even thinking of selling the boat but haven’t quite made up my mind on that one..
Any recommendations would be welcome.. cost of living is a big factor as we are not rich by any means ( we are both RN’s).. We got plenty of time to decide.. housing market is crazy here so should do well when we sell..

@malibu Dan, I would recommend checking out Tucson if you have the time while you’re in AZ. The Sonoran desert around Tucson is absolutely gorgeous. Summers are about 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix and winters are the same or often a few degrees warmer than Phoenix. Personally I prefer Tucson to Phoenix. I lived there for 10 years and loved it. If you want to know areas to check out there let me know.

From our research I would totally agree and Tucson is not off the table of possibilities.. as I get closer to the trip I may hit u up for insight on where to visit in Tucson while we r staying in Phoenix.. I guess job availability is our biggest concern..

Greeting Dan,
"my two cents to share" (perhaps you can identify with the following seeing you were raised in San Diego)
My wife and I were born in San Diego (mercy hospital). Raised family in North county (Encinitas), Early 90s moved to Kauai, Hawaii. After a three years (plus) moved back to SoCal. Balboa Island and then to Newport Island for 15 years. Surfing, snow skiing and Tennis defined our recreation life.
Family grown and all over the place my wife says she is up for another life adventure.
Many friends have moved to Arizona, It is a beautiful destination.
Our search realities were, after living in SoCal and Hawaii we knew we are not "Hardy" people. Snow, cold, heat and survival living is and has not been a part of our life. Plus we are 'ocean' not 'mountain' people.
We stumbled upon Punta Gorda in SW Florida. A jewel, a secret gem in plain sight. After two and one-half years we are still pinching ourselves at our fortune to have found this place. Nicest people (mostly seem to be from the Midwest). Virtually zero crime. Plus at least 100 times less expensive than SoCal coast living. We are the rare Calif. transplant here.
If you want the closest SoCal weather in Florida stay south E.W. line at Tampa. From there north is seems to get pretty cold during the winter.

Thank you for your thoughts.. my wife pushed initially for us to move Florida. I agree it is a beautiful state and the weather is great. I am worried that moving that far away from the kids/ grandkids puts us at more risk of no visits.. heck they may not visit us no matter where we move😉...

I agree, we will see after a week stay in May if Phoenix is still the place or if we decide to re-evaluate our choices... again thank you for the input it really helps. 👍

@malibu Dan went house-hunting in austin...a lot! Found some great possibilities but don’t know if we want to do two mortgages or rent out austin while we get our daughter through her first year of college before we bail. We too are going to phoenix at the end of april so we will take a look there again too. The property taxes are a huge advantage in phoenix for sure.
