fun times, Steering cable seized and snapped the steering shaft inside the steering assembly. So now I am replacing both cables and the assembly.

Question. What parts do I buy? Yamaha ($$$$) or another brand ($$)? I've read about Teleflex, but its hard to get a good cross reference back to the Yamaha Part #.

2006 AR230
Recommendations are welcome!

here are the part # and details I found.
Assembly F2D-U151A-00-00
PRT Cable F1C-U1470-10-00 228” or 19’
STB Cable F0R-U1470-10-00 204” or 17’

Thanks!

I’m in a similar situation, but just needing to replace the cables. I’m guessing you’ll have to get the Yamaha gear assembly, but as for the cables, Seastar cables seem to be the route to go. SSC21917 are 17’, and SSC21919 are 19’. I’ve gotten conflicting information regarding which lengths are needed for our boats, so I’ll probably just yank mine and measure them so I don’t get the wrong ones. The last two numbers in the part number are the length, so SSC21918 would be 18’....etc. www.wholesalemarine.com seems to have pretty good prices on them. If anyone has better info, I’m all ears...?

glad to have you on board @allenrobbins , where are you boating at?

I don't think we've ever seen anybody break that assembly before, normally the cable snaps,

I don't have any advice for cross referencing that part number,

Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, TX

it was a freak thing, came off plane into the marina no-wake, it stiffened up a lot and broke free. Luckily we were at the marina and used the engines to get into our slip.

I forgot to mention toward the bottom of the FAQ section is several threads on steering cables. I see you likely found them, but I am fairly certain that table is incorrect for our boats. Our boats run the cables from under the helm, to the right, along the starboard side, back to the engine compartment, where they come back towards center, then break off, and go to each nozzle. Now, due to them going to one side, and then back in, there should be two different lengths, whereas that table just shows one length. My understanding is the newer boats route the cables down the middle somehow, which then means the cables are both the same length. This is why I was going to just get measurements on the cables, and order once I knew what I'm dealing with. Unless, like I mentioned earlier, someone has already figured out for sure what I/we need.

Also, I read somewhere that you might be able to read a part number on the old cable. I was going to look for that last night, but completely forgot. I'll be checking into that this evening...

Of course the part numbers on the cable are barely legible, but they appear to be one 18’ and one 19’, as best I can tell. Check yours if you’re able, and maybe we can verify things.

That is correct. For the SX or AR230 they are 18 & 19 foot cables. The teleflex cable numbers are at the helm end of the cable. Make sure when you remove the cables you count and write down the number of turns it took to remove each nut to remove the old cables. Replace the new cables with the same number of turns. If done correctly this will insure your nozzels stay in alignment. You can tape the new cable to the old, inside the engine compartment, to pull it through the hull after feeding the new through the transom. Also be careful when installing the new cables as both ends look very similar but they are not. The long cable goes to the port bucket.

Yes, you will need the 18 and 19 footers also. The cheapest I found was Wholesale Marine, and Marine Parts Source, at about $125 apiece. Google search the part number, you'll get good options.
