After spending several hours cleaning and rejexing the boat this week, I found a small gash under the Hull maybe 1/16”-1/8“ deep. Could I repair something like this with 5200? 84772AE6-E8BE-4FD3-A7A2-65D3E8207BE1.jpeg
BTW, that’s not two holes, just a very shiny reflection :)

5200 would seal it, or you could use waxed gelcoat, then sand and buff.

@zipper Spectrum gel coat repair on order, thanks! Is there a polishing compound you recommend to follow the repair?

Most likely you'll need to wet sand with 320 then 600 followed by 1000 grit. Then use a rubbing compound followed by a polish to remove swirl marks. Personally, I've had good results by hand using 3M products. West Marine or any other marine chandlery will have something that works. Don't use an electric polisher unless you have experience with gelcoat.

3-M from paper to compound. You have a small repair and depending on how smooth the layering of the gelcoat goes will determine how aggresive the paper needs to be. 320, 600, 1000 all good and I might add a hit with 2000 before the polishing compound. There are videos on the interweb on how to, but just keep the paper wet and moving in a circular motion. Go easy until you get a feel for what is coming off. The mechanical polisher will bring back the shine.

Do use a block when you sand.

You will want to overfill the hole with the gelcoat a bit (it will shrink a tad as it dries), then cover with Saran wrap or similar. Then when you block sand, it will only take off the extra, leaving you with a level surface. If you just use the paper and your hand, you will take gelcoat off of the surrounding area and thin out your gelcoat around the repair.

Once you do it and see what we are talking about, you will be back telling us all how easy it was...

great suggestions, I’ll let you know how it goes. thanks!

I'm checking out compound/polish available on amazon prime...anyone recommend Meguiar's Marine/RV One Step Compound #67? I will be following it up with Rejex.

I like Meguiar's stuff, but a one-step usually implies it has wax in it. Before you apply Rejex you want a clean hull free of wax so it will bond with the gelcoat. If you're going to wash the whole boat with dish soap (like Dawn) to clean off the wax, then it doesn't matter as much.

I used M67 this weekend on a wool pad and was very impressed with it :)
They also have an even more aggressive one, M91 I think.

The Meguires one step compound is supposed to be compound/polish. Meguires says that it should be followed up with wax or sealant, so I guess it's ok.
