I was ready to seatrial my port engine after patching the cylinder block. I had also pulled the Starboard to correct an overheat issue. After reinstalling Starboard I filled oil cooler with oil and more oil and more oil. I am hoping it is an oil pump check valve. But I think I have too much oil in the sump. And if the check valve is bad, better to replace it now than latter. The boat is a 2007 SX230HO with approximately 100 hours on each engine. The engine was running fine on the hose. After shutting in down for a short time oil registered low. I filled it. I did this 3 times. I need some advice, please.

How many quarts have you put in so far?

As long as you see it somewhere on the dipstick I'd run it on the water gingerly and monitor it

@Scottintexas. Scott, That is the problem. I add oil and see nothing on the dipstick. I think it is collecting in the sump. Absolutely no oil leaks anywhere.

How many quarts do you estimate are in it?

I am thinking at least 6. It takes 4.3 I guess I could start it for a few seconds and see if it pumps up.

Yes and take your air filter off

I check my oil level with the engine running, due to the dip stick being in the dry sump. Or within seconds of shutting down. I add a little less than required and do my final check on the water while at idle. I am always below the full mark. If you added 6qts. initially, you will be pulling some out before you start it.

Yes. Sorry for late response. I never had to do this before. Ran engine on hose for 10 minutes. No problem! Came back later. Nothing on dipstick. Filled to full. Did this three times and it is still a no-show on dipstick. I have no idea.

Hmmm... That is a good one. It must be going somewhere. Unless you have an oil leach or something.

On this engine you fill at the oil cooler? Could there be a blockage below that so oil is not getting to the sump but is going elsewhere in the engine?

Do engines smoke while running? Are you seeing oil in the cooling water draining from the boat while running?

It registered full when I started running it in the hose. Ran it for 10 minutes. No problem. Shut it down. Checked oil later. Nothing on dipstick. Filled it to full. Checked it later. Nothing in dipstick. Did this three times. No leaks anywhere. Is anyone familiar with the check valve in the oil pump? Thanks for help.

Thanks Gym. No oil in cooling water. No smoke or steam. Running on hose, everything was normal. It wasn't until afterward that that dipstick started registering nothing.

I don't have my manual to reference but the check valve on the pump certainly seems like a direction to look,
If you know you have more than 6 qts I'd be very cautious, i wonder about checking it while running like zipper said and then monitor it immediately after turning off to see if the oil drains down

As soon as it stops raining here, I am going to try bumping the starter without ignition to see if oil cooler starts to fill. All the oil must be down in the sump. That tells me the feed/pressure side must be working. I checked out thread "School me on the MRI dry sump oil system." Betterwhenitswetter had the opposite problem.

Yeah, @zipper generally knows his stuff. If he says check it running, I would start there. Manual should tell you on that front exactly the procedure for checking the oil level.

On a MR-1 equipt boat I personally would not hesitate starting it and letting it run 15 seconds without cooling water. But that is just me.

OK...I just uncovered the back of the Yamaha to check the oil level in the dry sump, using the dip sticks after sitting all Winter. I would not hesitate to fire them up seeing this on the stick. Check oil level while running or right after shutting down to get an accurate reading. Starboard engine...

Does not even measure, but I know there are 4qts.+ in there.

This is where I shoot for cold on trailer. From more than a decade of checking on trailer and then on water. Seems like the oil light would come on if not enough. Mine comes on briefly when changing the oil and filter sometimes...not all, but some. If every drop of oil was gone out of the engine, then I wouldn't be surprised if 5Q was put back in as it's not all going to drain back in to the sump, but 6??? Are you sure you put 6Q in?

The manual does not give the timeframe details about checking a dry sump right after shutting down. Manual does say 4.3 qts. Full. And to fill until oil is visible on the tip of the stick. Then run engine and check again after shutdown, just do it right after.
You can check while running, it is not going to make a mess.
