Hello All - I am new to sight & hoping someone may be able to direct me to a reputable, classic Searay parts dealer. I need a flywheel for '93 Searayder/Merc sportjet 90. I am in the midwest, but, I am sure it can be shipped anywhere. Any suggestions?? TY

I believe it’s the same engine as a 90hp force outboard, so any mercury dealer should be able to get you one.

Double check the part numbers but I think this is it

Thank you so much. As I am not a mechanic - would the part #'s be the same for inboard vs. outboard? My part # is 817494A18. All parts dealers say it is out of production/stock. However, I have been told it may be an interchangeable part. I just need some guidance as to ho to confirm.

Your “inboard” sportjet uses the top half of an “outboard”. Basically they used the engine from an outboard and mated it with a jet pump and mounted it inboard your sea raider....if that makes any sense.

So the sport jet shares a lot of the same parts as other Mercury’s. But to complicate matters it looks like the flywheel you have was part of a CDM ignition kit upgrade.

So I’m not sure the one I linked would work or not

You were spot on!!! I called Mercury Marine directly. Told her my flywheel is not longer in production. She asked for engine serial #. Then said, "your part is still in production it's part # is 859241T10!" Thank you for getting me on track & allowing me to find this part. Without a little direction I am sure I would still be floundering. TY

The flywheel you have (817494A18) shows up as the one that comes in the CDM ignition upgrade kit. So if she went by the engine serial # you might want to double check that the 8....t10 flywheel will still work.

I’m 99% sure that if you have the CDM kit the flywheel has been swapped... I think Pre 1996 was a CDI ignition and used a one magnet flywheel vs a two magnet flywheel for the cdm kit and post 1996 sport-jets

Below are the Flywheel comparisons. My old ones & the version as supplied from Mercury with my Serial #. Thoughts???

Looks pretty much the same. But there is a difference between the magnet spacing. The new one has bigger gaps. Not sure it matters.

Read this thread...

The last post talks about the different magnet set up in a stock sport jet and one with the conversion kit. I suppose it’s possible that sea ray spec’d the engine to have CDM from the factory in which case we’ve got the right replacement ;)

I just don’t know enough to know what I don’t know. But I know that era of engines had several different ignition setups.

Why do you need a fly wheel did the magnets come loose? usually the brains blow out due to a bad rectifier that allows 12 volts to run back to the field wingdings when you turn the ignition off , it creates a bad charge and runs through the brain, the boat will run just fine until you shut off the ignition then it just won't start I did a write up a while ago about replacing your rectifier with a jet ski voltage rectifier so it does not happen , your charging system had electrolytic capacitors for a rectifiers, those converted the AC current from the stator into pulsating DC current if the capacitor went bad The brain got fried . That is the simple explanation any way
Any way just wondering why the flywheel

mFm;
It would appear the CDM replacement is often referred to as the "RED" stator which replaced the "BLACk". Attached is a photo of my RED stator. Can you confirm that the "red" confirms my boa converted to CDM? I truly have appreciated your insight so far - THANK YOU!

The black stator is what it would have originally came with.

The red stator was an upgraded version that does come with the CDM kit...But it will work with either flywheel. Some used the red stator without upgrading to CDM.

I believe that to be great news. So to reiterate, yopu believe the red stater should work with flywheel #859241T10 vs 859241T18 which is out of production?

Oh one more thing, I belived you sent me a li to a rough diagram of differing magnet configurations utilized for single & double magnet "triggers". Can you send me that link again?

Here is the IPL diagrams for a 93 sportjet

There are three different ignition versions (based on serial #) some of which have 2 different options.

There is also a link diagram for the CDM kit which changes quite a few components. Based on quick look of the last pic you posted it looks like you do NOT have the CDM kit based on the diagrams...the yellow fuse makes me think this. I’d compare some of the other ignition part numbers to make sure.

No problem. Make sure to pick up some valve grinding compound to lap the new flywheel to the crankshaft.

How did you end up with this flywheel issue. I think I have the same problem. I think one of my magnets came loose. I'm in the process of getting the flywheel off, which is proving to be quite the chore

I bought the flywheel from "PartsVu" out of Florida as shown in photo above ($550). When removing the flywheel take note of what color Stator (Red or Black) you have underneath as this will dictate parts. Read the whole thread & any links & you will get the jist of what took place. Most threads are problem specific or will help give an understanding of problem. I am NOT a mechanic & did not do the work. But I am mechanically inclined & understood the threads & discussions for the most part. This greatly assisted me in obtaining the correct parts. My mechanic was doing this as a side job & tasked me to obtain parts. After flywheel was installed, I still had to spark, so mechanic had me purchase an "electronic switch box" ($250-CDI brand from PartsVu). After installing that , he water tested it & said it was running terrific! I was going to test last week myself but need to re-wire all trailer lights first. UGH! Good Luck.
