SeaDek vs Carpet: How Does it Compare Cleaning & Viability Long Term?

Want some feedback from some of you that have had carpet in your boat for at least 6 months, and then switched to SeaDek (preferably from JetBoatPilot since that's where I'm thinking of buying from)...

Here's the deal... I've got a new boat and carpet. I've planned from the beginning to eventually get SeaDek because I love the way it looks.
Now that I've had the boat for 2 months, I've noticed that I'm ALWAYS cleaning the thing! Dirt sticks to the white seats like crazy! The stock hydroturf on the rear swimdeck also gets stained incredibly easy. But, one thing I don't feel like I ever have to clean is the floor! The carpet just seems to mask any dirt, and all I ever do is go around the edges of the carpet once in awhile and pickup the dirt that's accumulating there.

Ironically, I feel like I'm always cleaning everything BUT the carpet, which always seems to just look clean and nice. I pulled it out only once to shake it off and clean underneath, and probably didn't really even need to. No mold/smell issue, or anything like that. So now I'm questioning whether or not it's really a good idea to put SeaDek in.

For those of you that have had carpet for long enough to get used to it with cleaning, and have switched to SeaDek - what are your thoughts regarding cleaning? Do you find you have to vacuum the SeaDek more, scrub it? Does dirt show up more than carpet? Does the dirt accumulate in all of those grooves and become annoying to clean? Any other discoveries in favor for or against SeaDek over carpet?

My boat is 20+ years old and the carpet (removable) still looks pretty darn good. Not sure how long SeaDek has been around but I’ve yet to see someone say that 20 year old SeaDek still looks good.

SeaDek amazing, one of the best modifications we did on our boat. We had used the carpet for 3 seasons.

So is the SeaDek better quality and overall than what I have stock on my Swim Platform? That stuff stays dirty and I have to scrub the heck out of it. It is light gray.

With Seadeck, We’ve spilled catsup, bbq sauce, sunscreen and lord knows whatever else and just dump water on it, rub and spot is gone. We also boat in dirty, muddy river water and it doesn’t show. Love the stuff

Tons of posters on other boat forums say they degrade if in direct sun and the glue deterioration causes the edges to curl up.
After a while it looks worn, by awhile means a couple years
Lastly some colors get very hot.

I think I had the carpet for about 4 years, maybe 5. Well, that is not true exactly; I still have it hanging in the storage unit, in case I want to go back to it. Hint: that won't be happening. Love the SeaDek. Love, love, love. Why?
- Much quicker to use and put away the boat without needing to take out the carpet and hang it/take it down and install it.
- More durable. I left the carpet in during a brief tow once. Ripped the snap out of the carpet. Never an issue with the SeaDek.
- Seems cooler on the feet. I don't know why and it is probably all mental. But I'm happy...
- Cleans up nicely. Never had any issue with a stain or dirt on the SeaDek. About the biggest mess was a bunch of silt/sand from an anchor I brought up too quickly once--all over the bow area. Rinsed it off...
- Looks amazing.

How often do you feel like you need to clean the SeaDek? Like I said, with the carpet - I've had the boat out about a total of 8 times, and I've never once felt the need to vacuum or clean the carpet whatsoever. No visible stains, nothing.

I have affirmatively cleaned it (other than stuff like the lumps of silt and sand)... um... twice? Maybe? Really, I think I cleaned the carpet more, but neither of them were major cleaning time at all...

We’ve been out 2-3days every weekend almost Since Easter and still haven’t cleaned the Seadeck. Like I said we have had stuff spill on it & also occasionally the kids will get on with muddy feet so we have a 1/2gallon bucket and rinse with the river water and all is good. Won’t wash it until I winterize.

FWIW, the stock mat that comes on the back of the boat (marine mat, I think), is a royal PITA to clean. I have a couple of pieces of seadek that I've added, and that gets back to looking like brand new with just the hose and some rubbing.

The super light grey is also just a dirt magnet.

I think I'm going to do the darker shade of grey throughout the boat this winter.

@Daren and Heather .... we have a 2020 Yamaha SX195. Marine Mat (from the factory) on both levels of the swim platform deck and very attractive (black colored snaps and black trim on the carpet edges) really good looking and I believe pretty expensive - BUT - it gets hotter than h3ll. Was out for about four hours today. Anchored for lunch and put my scuba mask and shorty wet suit on to clean the drive and hull while the Admiral supervised topside. Climbed back onto the Marine Mat - no worries. Stepped onto the oem floor mats GEEZ they were hot. For now flip flops when walking on areas that have been in the sun for 30 minutes or more. Future - maybe order Marine Mat using the templates from a sister ship the 2020 195S and install the snaps myself? I say order Marine Mat not because I have any concerns with Sea Dek but because I know the Marine Mat will color match what I already have, there is a factory template available, it is super easy to clean (a nasty mustard stain and grease from the dealership came out easily) and it is AWESOME for NOT heating up when under a blazing sun - which is when I prefer to boat!

There is no doubt that seadek looks good. I too question the longevity and one rip or tear would require significant investment in cost, time, and effort to replace. I actually like the carpet and have resisted the group think that will eat at your decision to NOT install seadek.

@Daren and Heather and @scokill .....I love the look of the Yamaha factory woven carpet it is a breeze to clean and was probably constructed from some environmentally-friendly composite as it does not seem that it will ever get mildew or mold. My only concern is that it gets hot. Flip flops cure that as does putting up the bimini top when anchored. So I guess I'm on the fence - is it worth replacing something that does 3/4 of the major things really well but lacks in one area? Bottom line: replacing it is not something that I have to do NOW because I can't live with it - it's just a bit of an annoyance. If I do replace it will be with the same Marine Mat that is on the rear deck swim platforms - that is awesome!

We added SeaDek about 2 years ago and it's great. A few comments; it dries really fast (faster than my carpet), it does not get too hot, it's very easy to clean, I only have to clean it if someone tracks dirt on it, otherwise, it stays very clean and finally it looks really nice verses the standard carpet that came with our boat. I cannot speak to the longevity, but after 2 years it looks just like new (knock on wood). I will tell you it's way better quality than the cheap stuff that came on the swim deck originally. That always looked dirty and was not as thick. Just a few thoughts on my experience with SeaDek. One last add, we purchased from JetBoatPilot when they had their annual sale around August/September timeframe. Great company to deal with as well. Good luck on your decision.

So I have a 2015 240, that had the plush carpet in the main area and it came with cheap grey foam crap on the rear swim platform, seemed like it was deteriorating just sitting there.

Installed sea deck on swim platform, anchor locker surround, mat by front passenger seat, and head area.

I did not like the look of the Seadeck I seen installed in the main area as it has cutouts around all the screws for the ski locker bolts, cover for main gas tank etc. looked too choppy for me.

The carpet was high quality and I really liked it right up until we got caught in the rain several times.

Had to be pulled out and hung up to dry which could take 1-2 days. Not ideal when on vacation and on boat every day.

I found a place in Michigan that makes mats, uisng seagrass and other materials for boats. I had them send me several samples of the patterns, colors I wanted and checked them in the boat and against the carpet color. I then sent them my carpet and they used it as a pattern to make the new mats. I I hadd to install the snaps in the mats, but was very easy to do. Love te new stuff looks factory, dies instantly. and can be pulled out

I really wish JBP would carry a OEM correct snap-in option similar to marine mat. Anyway...

3rd year now with our snap in carpets, I take them out and clean them about every 3rd outing.

Yes, the carpet gets hot quick. I just did the $20 solution and bought a bazooka squirt gun and shoot a load of water through the cockpit and bow. Cools it right down. If it re-heats I give it another squirt.
