I wouldnt call 1 broken driveshaft an issue where you should not trust your boat. That really is an unheard of thing but it is metal and there can certainly be random flaws during manufacturing like anything else. Now if we start to see a bunch of people posting about snapped shaft....then its an issue worth noting.

Ya and looks like its SVHO issue with bigger boats. I dont really go over 6K rpm so probably shouldn't worry about it.

They said i broke a drive shaft, the shaft and the impeller need to be replaced. They said the housing is scored but doesn’t look damaged. No idea what any of that means.
If they said the housing is "scored", they're referring to the stainless wear ring that is inside the aluminum housing. Ask them to send photos of the housing damage. I would ask them to replace the housing as well if it has any damage. You will have cavitation issues with large imperfections in the wear ring. I just had my boat in the shop getting both driveshafts, impellers, housings, transom plates, bearings and seals replaced due to corrosion behind the wear ring in the housings and corrosion on the back side of the transom plates. Dealer had my boat for over 6 weeks waiting on parts (specifically impellers and bearings) so hopefully you won't be in the same situation.

This is true. The 275 cavitates like a sob as it is when everything is new. If the impeller or housing has even the slightest wear or nick then have it replaced.

I just saw your comments in the other thread with same issue. Both newer boat, this sucks, I have a 2021 190 so I can go offshore (on a calm day), now with this drive shaft issue on newer boats I better stay within radio range for towboatus.
Buy a Garmin InReach satellite messenger; you have global range and a back up GSP to get you home. They start at $400, and the service is $12 a month. You can text any mobile phone, and they can respond. You also can contact the GEOS monitoring center with an SOS or an SOS with instructions such as call Tow Boats/Sea Tow at this number to request assistance. The InReach is fully independent (massive electrical failure, fire, swamped, capsized and etc. do not stop it from working) and wearable.

Okay. Service center called. They said they called Yamaha to check warranty and it is a warranty issue. But they said it’s also a safety issue and want to send inspectors from Yamaha to look at the boat to see if anything else wrong before fixing and getting back on the water. They said that at the speed everything spins “it” (not sure what “it” is...the impeller?) could punch through the hull. This is VERY disappointing because it means I’m off the water for at least a month I guess and that my boat is not trustworthy? A high speed metal part might punch through the hull? WTF? The service center said he can just fix it if I want but neither he nor Yamaha would recommend. Advice? Not excited about a month off the water.

I’m confused as to why Yamaha inspectors would need to see it to determine if there are any other issues. I would expect the dealer to be more than qualified to perform that inspection and report back. Not to mention correct any other issues they find. Which dealer is this, if you don’t mind me asking?

It seems a lot of fluff from the dealer... See if you can't get the wear ring replaced. Beyond that, nothing to worry about, would be my verdict. And what could a Yamaha inspector see that is not in plain sight after such a failure while they are replacing the pump bearings, shaft and impeller? can't think of anything.

Probably a long shot but can you ask for a loaner boat like car dealer do? Hope they fix it for you soon.

yeah dealer bs i think. Ok yes its spinning and who knows maybe it could punch through the hull but it would be clearly visible if there was impact damage that yamaha needs to look at. If there is none then what are they going to see

looks like a broken shaft on the impeller, unless I am seeing it wrong.

@BGN123 Do as they advise! Failure has happened multiple times. For sure, twice that we know of.

There have been other broken drive shafts. I recall one on a 230 and another on a 240 but that’s only 2 out of thousands of posts. I recall other posts where the spines on the shaft were stripped. In all cases the replacement shafts were immediately available and/or back ordered, so it took a while to get the boats back on the water. Yamaha sports plaza doesn’t have a price for the shaft which usually means they don’t have any in stock.

Here is a screen shot of all the parts referenced. Part 16 is the what, 22 is the impeller and 2 is the housing.

A broken drive shaft should not cause the engine to die though, just spin without producing thrust. Did I miss or mis read something earlier in this thread ?

The engines ran fine at the shop. Mystery because they seemed dead. I told the local guy to fix / replace everything. Not waiting for some Yamaha inspectors to come to a far away place that can do warranty work. Maybe I regret it but gotta try my new BBQ.

I did drive the boat as hard as I could a lot of the time. Constantly doing full sprint from a stop to make the kids squeal and a lot of tubing and wakeboarding. It only has 50 hours though. My current theory is as follows: I heard some whirring/squeaking for a long time before it happened (on way back in). I’m guessing some kind of bearings failed and something was grinding. And creating a lot of friction and getting worse. I gunned when I got out of no wake zone and the RPMs wouldn’t rise very much and then the engine died. I’m guessing that’s when it snapped. I was taking the RPMs up when the drive was having trouble turning. Are there some kind of bearings in there somewhere? The whirring was probably when it was failing.

hoping for <2 weeks.
