Hey All,

Excited to be part of this community. Finally fulfilled my dream and bought a boat for me and my family. Had the SX195 on backorder but after 9 months without getting it, decided to just jump up to a white 2022 212SD with warm interior that was in stock.

At any rate, if anyone is willing to help a noob, I have a few questions below. Appreciate any and all help. Thanks everyone!

  • Cover, anyone know the best place to get these? I was just going to grab one from Yamaha's site, but looks like I don't see one for 2022. Is it safe to say that the cover for the 2021 212SD should still work with the 2022 SD? Direct product link: Yamaha Deluxe Premium Tower Mooring Cover - 21 FT
  • Thrust Vectors / Lateral Thrusters, if I understand things right, I really only need the Thrust Vectors and can/should skip the Lateral Thrusters?
  • Boat Trailer Roller - The stock roller with my trailer is putting quite a few marks on the hull of the boat, is this normal or do most people replace the stock one? Any recommendations here?

Any other things to consider or buy for a first time tips for a new Yamaha boat owner? Thanks again!

Congratulations and welcome aboard! Nice step up in boat from the 195 to the 212SD! Any photos to share?

  • I do not believe there were any changes from 2021 to 2022 on the 212SD, and the cover should work.
  • There are numerous post that compare JPB Thrust Vectors & Cobra Jet Fins here (competing products, both with a vendor presence here on the forum). As for the LT’s, I believe in the last few years (2019 if I recall) was when Yamaha changed the design of the pump, and currently there are not LTs on the market that will work with you boat. However, JBP is working on a new design.
  • As for the roller, “stoltz” is the brand that many recommend to assist with the marring issue. Not sure if you need a 3.5” or 4” roller for your trailer.
Where are you boating out of?

2021 cover will work fine. I do not know where the best price is these days. Google will be your friend. TV/LT been discussed at large, just do a search. If you can drive you boat fine you don't need either. If you are having problems its worth the try. Most of us have replaced the boat roller. Again just search this site and it will tell you which one/size people went with for your size boat.

Welcome to the club you will love the boat!

Welcome! I'm still learning how to use my boat, but I absolutely love it! I put the Cobras on mine and am happy with the results. I'll make some slight adjustments when I pull it out of the slip for the winter, but it handles really well after the installation. I'm ordering the new Stultz bow roller today. My mooring cover is awesome. Whoever thought to build in ratchet straps into the cover is a genius.

Congrats on the new boat. We have a 2021 212SD and love it.

1. The only difference between our two boats is the color scheme so the 2021 cover will work. However, good luck finding one. I have been waiting for my cover to arrive for 6 months. I ended up ordering it from JetBoatPilot and used the 10% offer for new customers. While waiting, I got tired of having to drop the tower evetime I put the shipping cover on so I ended up ordering a cover from Amazon that has been pretty solid in lieu of the factory cover.

2. I am unable to comment on the Thrust Vectors as I elected to go with Cobra Jet Steering

3. Definitely replace the stock roller with the Stoltz brand.

Couple of tips that I learned

1. Create a check list for various scenarios (Trailering, Loading, Unloading). Makes it much easier to cover all bases.

2. When loading or unloading, already have dock lines tied to the cleats. That little step makes things go so much smoother. Check out Miami Boat Ramps on YouTube and you can see the difference between the people that are prepared and not prepared.

3. For our boating situations, our general request is that guests stay out of the way when loading or unloading. Depending on which side of the dock we are going towards, we usually ask guests to move to the opposite side. While we appreciate that guests would like to help us out when we come to the dock, my wife and I have a system that works for us.

4. One of the best items we bought was a Telescoping boat hook. At our dock we have dock hands so we can hand them our ropes when we are still 10 feet out and glide nicely into the dock. That has been the main benefit for us but we have definitely used it for other tasks.

5. The other item that we bought is a cheap pair of walkie talkies. These work great when loading or unloading the boat at the ramp. Our ramp is pretty busy and we tend to have a lot of people who aren't aware of their surroundings so having someone in the boat giving you verbal cues is helpful when your line of sight is compromised by a 21 foot boat/trailer.

Thank you, very helpful! I'm boating out of Cincinnati, OH. For quick/short trips we'll head over to Brookville Lake in Indiana, for longer trips we'll likely head down to Norris Lake and Lake Cumberland. Added some pics below. Thanks again!

Thank you so much! Extremely helpful. Doh! That sucks on the cover wait! This year has been a tough year to buy things. Thank you for the extra tips, we'll have to add those into our list of things. I would have never thought about walkie talkies, that's a great idea!

My advice on steering is to wait and see what you feel you need to address if anything then look at the super magnum ak-19 deluxe system and compare it's features and benefits to the thrust vectors Huge difference from materials position of the fins adjustable all time steering and the very important patented second tie rod . along with the extra top fins for slow speed and huge super fins for both high and slow speed. No plastic parts and no removing the stainless steel factory standoffs from the reverse buckets.

Dang, now you guys have me thinking, hehe. Thanks for posting this and providing a recommendation. I know other people on this thread said they also use Cobra over Thrust Vectors. We took the boat out once already, and the low speed steering (the most stressful part of boating) is something I can see being improved. Looking into the Cobra super magnum ak-19 deluxe system now! I believe this is the direct link: Cobra Venom Magnum AK 19-Series (cobrajetsteering.com). Do you recommend the fangs as well?

Thanks again!

I ran with and without the fangs. I only noticed a small difference with reverse control but not with steering as our boats already have electric steering control

Congratulations on the new boat. A few suggestions on other things. An extra fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, some extra "boat only" sunglasses for when family or friends forget or lose them, extra "boat only" charging cables for phones (same story). . Enjoy the new boat

I'm a huge fan of my lateral thrusters. I can pretty much move/crab the boat straight sideways to the dock if I needed to (nudge the front end, slide the rear, nudge the front end, slide the rear)...I'm sure it's possible without them, but it sure makes it easy!

Congrats! Enjoy the heck out of it!

...some intentional practice around the docks (and other scenarios) goes a LONG way.

JetBoat Pilot just came out with new lateral thrusters for the 2019 and newer bucket design. If you think you need more ability to walk the boat (during docking) after driving it this might be a good option. On a windy day or in a strong current is where this product would be beneficial on a twin 2019 (or newer with the new bucket design).

In 2019 Yamaha came out with new nozzle designs to assist with reverse control and I believe they work fine in comparison to the previous 2 nozzle designs. I doubt most people fully understand reverse on jet boats..
SO lets look at a common prop boat of similar size. The transom is smooth and angled out at the top, some are also angled out in the center to allow the boat to move and turn easily and predictably when backing up.
A jet boat usually has a flat transom and some have a deck above the pumps.
The transom has the pumps protruding under the water line when the boat is off plane.
With Yamaha boats The pumps sit in a recess in the transom. One may actually think of those recesses as sea anchors when it comes to trying to back the boat as those add drag and require more reverse thrust to move the boat through the water backward as compared to the regular transom of a prop boat.
The angled transoms of a regular prop boat also lift the back of the boat when in reverse reducing the contact surfaces thus reducing the force needed to go backward.
On the Yamaha jet boats the angle of the reverse thrust on all the nozzles also helps to lift the transom when backing.
And the same angles also lift the transom and puts the bow down in the water when using reverse to stop, especially in an emergency stop.
I would believe that when Yamaha put the angles in the newest nozzle designs from 2019 they also had to calculate the necessary thrust downward and the new slight angle outward so the boat still lifts up in the back when reverse is applied.
So is it really a good idea to take about 1/2 of that calculated thrust Yamaha applied and shoot it out both sides of the nozzle laterally removing both the downward angle and the forward angle ???
And since equal and opposing forces cancel each other out I don't see the benefit of the setup on that aspect either hmmm . Hey it's your boat do whatever you like to it !!!
I made the fangs to increase the useable reverse thrust for backing off trailer, beaches and floating docks also for capturing and directing more of the reverse thrust to improve the steering response in reverse and improve the stopping power, then I added the longer mega fang plus for added power steering effect as well as quicker turning on plane ..

Now as far as the steering systems go for the articulating keel boats including the newest nozzle and reverse design, these boats bleed off speed in turns reducing the fun during watersport activities like tubing, they loose control when rapidly decelerating, the don't have the necessary control to handle rough water easily .. and they lack redundancy in the steering system. I handle all that because I make adjustable full time steering , my AK-19 systems also have the cut out leading edges on the fins to accommodate the new nozzle designs. My systems also add a patented second tie rod so that the steering is operated by both sides of the system not just one. And I set up the steering to form a V configuration with my fins up higher than the rudder and keel to reduce any clearance issues in shallow water. I also make various levels of my systems including spring loaded, even the basic system is well received and very effective. deluxe versions of the single and twin engine boats from model year 2015 to current models , I also have the deluxe versions that offer the plaining surfaces and top fins for even more features and benefits and always at buy direct discount prices .

Congrats!!! I think in the long run you will bet glad the sx195 was back ordered (you bought your second boat first).

While you are trying to find a nice fitted cover, Buy a $60 cover from Walmart….I did for my boat and it keeps the rain out, and the sun off.

I had to make a “T” base for the bow and rear though so the rain will just run off instead of puddling (just made it out of PVC pipe).
