Got a strange rattle coming from the front drivers side wheel well that happens sporadically at speeds above 30 mph. No secondaries on the dash, steering, acceleration and handling unaffected. Got underneath it this morning and checked the suspension and everything’s tight. Switched the front two tires while I had it on jacks and took it back out. Same thing but check this out, when I switch it to 4WD the rattle goes away.. any ideas?

The hose that goes to the hub has a vacuum leak. Or the Hub seal has a leak. This causes the hub to partially engage. I had to pull the hose off the hub and seal with a little silicone.

It sounds like your IWE (Integrated Wheel End) that engages the 4WD. Had the same issue on mine, sounded like a grinding noise and was very intermittent. Basically the hub engagement is trying to drop into place at speed. In 2WD the engagement is normally held off by the IWE/Vacuum System/Magic. In 4WD and when the ignition is off, the hub engages. If it is bad, it needs to be replaced, otherwise the hose connection may be bad like @McMark says. Mine was damaged when I had the shocks replaced. Now I do it all myself.

Some youtube videos will help you diagnose and show you how easy it is to inspect the issue. It could be one of a few parts of the IWE, hopefully easy repair like the hose or the check valve. You can drive in Auto (if you have it) or 4wd High for now to keep the hubs engaged and eliminate any possible damage.

Send me a message if you need more info or guidance. Not that complicated a system, but I didn't know about it/hadn't really thought about it until I had the issue.

Ok thanks @McMark and @jawsf16. It have an electronic 4WD shifter so I will keep it in 4A for now while I see how to inspect.
Update: most of the YouTube videos I watched called out the IWE check valve as the main culprit for this issue. Replaced it this morning—$21 from the dealership. So far so good on the road test! 46518287-05ED-41AC-9F06-300CD439EF39.jpegB922B6E6-8D47-429D-BE50-166699E2099E.jpeg

Nice job! If you have someone move the truck into and out of 4wd with engine running while you listen near the wheel Hub you should be able to hear them engage/disengage. Same thing happens when you turn off or on ignition but it’s harder to hear. This should give you high confidence that it’s fixed.
