That is only true for normally front wheel drive vehicles. All the rear wheel drive 3.5 turbo or non-turbo the water pump is external. I would recommend that if you own a 3.5 front wheel drive (ex.-explorer), that at 100,000 miles you should replace the water pump before any internal damage occurs.
And a water pump is not $40. Unless you want to get a aftermarket pump that is junk. I'm just saying if a water pump can last 100,000 miles that's pretty good in my book.

Very true about the fwd engines like in the Edge. It it internal behind the timing chain cover and will most likely leak inside the engine (milky oil) if failing. As stated, the 3.5 eco in the F-150 is different. I “overhauled” the cooling system a while back when leaks started to appear. I also got the notorious leak from the cheap plastic expansion tank hose fitting. With brittle plastic, best option for me was an aluminum expansion tank upgrade (beautiful welds)!

10-4 Fordman. I stand corrected. The RWD Explorers and PU's do not have this issue.

I got the V8 for different reasons, but I guess I will add one more Plus to it.
