Long time reader, first time posting and hoping for some advice. I’m in the market for a SX190 and found a 2019 in Ohio. I drove 2 hours to see it in person and make an offer. The lady is getting up in age, has health problems (lots of stories) but not in a rush to sell. She bought it from her close friend described as non-blood sister, but I didn’t get the reason why the first owner sold it to her. The boat has sat for a year without use in a garage according to her, and only been on the water a few times. The trailer has not moved in 1 year. It was in great shape inside but needs a thorough cleaning in and out. Electronics all checked out, but a trickle charger was hooked up. I didn’t crank the engine, which was my mistake. Her husband supposedly did all the maintenance, including 10hr, so there are no shop/maintenance records. There were little things like the swim deck cup holders being swapped to cup holders with rod holders that made me check it over again for other changes.

The issue: There was some dock rash, but nothing that concerned me on the rub rail or anywhere else. I would expect a few bumps and maybe some scratches. She pointed out a scratch that was pretty far down the front hull and it was not all the way through the gel coat so it didn’t bother me / could be easily touched up. I found damage that looked to have been self-repaired, with possibly bondo, where I think the boat sits below the water line but I could be wrong. She acted weird about it and I simply said the other side doesn’t look like this at all, plus you could feel that it wasn’t perfectly smooth. One of her stories was about falling off it (a reason to sell it) and it bumping a dock. She pointed to the original scratch far down the hull and not the obvious repair, which didn’t make sense to me. She didn’t budge on price and had no interest in a water test because of her health. No idea why her husband couldn’t get involved but he wasn’t there for my visit.
What is your opinion with semi-fishy stories, no maintenance logs, and this obvious attempt at a repair job? Is that something that requires a fiberglass specialist and if yes, how what’s a rough estimate? Also, attaching a picture of the paper towel I checked the oil with. I know the boat is practically new, but the dipstick seemed dirty or had metal shavings still. I thought the 10hr oil change would reduce that, but I’ve never owned one. Also, without the engine being warm, it wasn’t a great check.
Listed at 35k, said she wouldn’t let it go for less than 30k. I offered 28k cash w/o a water test but with a hose test or 29k with a water test. She said she’d try other offers first. I'm not sure I can spend that much without a trial... it would feel like buying a used car without a test drive.
Open to any and all advice or suggestions. Thank you in advance, as this forum is an absolute wealth of knowledge.
