Long time reader, first time posting and hoping for some advice. I’m in the market for a SX190 and found a 2019 in Ohio. I drove 2 hours to see it in person and make an offer. The lady is getting up in age, has health problems (lots of stories) but not in a rush to sell. She bought it from her close friend described as non-blood sister, but I didn’t get the reason why the first owner sold it to her. The boat has sat for a year without use in a garage according to her, and only been on the water a few times. The trailer has not moved in 1 year. It was in great shape inside but needs a thorough cleaning in and out. Electronics all checked out, but a trickle charger was hooked up. I didn’t crank the engine, which was my mistake. Her husband supposedly did all the maintenance, including 10hr, so there are no shop/maintenance records. There were little things like the swim deck cup holders being swapped to cup holders with rod holders that made me check it over again for other changes.

Connext info: 19.9 hours, 230.1 miles, 79.9 Gallons burned, 52.9 Max MPH

The issue: There was some dock rash, but nothing that concerned me on the rub rail or anywhere else. I would expect a few bumps and maybe some scratches. She pointed out a scratch that was pretty far down the front hull and it was not all the way through the gel coat so it didn’t bother me / could be easily touched up. I found damage that looked to have been self-repaired, with possibly bondo, where I think the boat sits below the water line but I could be wrong. She acted weird about it and I simply said the other side doesn’t look like this at all, plus you could feel that it wasn’t perfectly smooth. One of her stories was about falling off it (a reason to sell it) and it bumping a dock. She pointed to the original scratch far down the hull and not the obvious repair, which didn’t make sense to me. She didn’t budge on price and had no interest in a water test because of her health. No idea why her husband couldn’t get involved but he wasn’t there for my visit.

What is your opinion with semi-fishy stories, no maintenance logs, and this obvious attempt at a repair job? Is that something that requires a fiberglass specialist and if yes, how what’s a rough estimate? Also, attaching a picture of the paper towel I checked the oil with. I know the boat is practically new, but the dipstick seemed dirty or had metal shavings still. I thought the 10hr oil change would reduce that, but I’ve never owned one. Also, without the engine being warm, it wasn’t a great check.

Listed at 35k, said she wouldn’t let it go for less than 30k. I offered 28k cash w/o a water test but with a hose test or 29k with a water test. She said she’d try other offers first. I'm not sure I can spend that much without a trial... it would feel like buying a used car without a test drive.

Open to any and all advice or suggestions. Thank you in advance, as this forum is an absolute wealth of knowledge.

Seems like a LOT of rash and repair for that low of hours. I guess it could be explained by them not being able to control it, smashing it around, and not wanting to take it out much after? That repair looks like something I would do (not a good thing;)).

I'm sure you're eager to get it and get on the water but I'd let the offer stand, not go any higher, and demand a water test. My first boat had problems and I bought it knowing only half of them because I was so eager to not waste any more time. The boat was super unreliable and broke down on the water... twice... leaving me and the family paddling. I swore never again as being in that position sucks.

How does the base model SX190 hit 52mph? That can’t be correct. I think the 2019 model tops out in the low 40’s. Seems odd for the Connext to report.

Honestly, I would be cautious. Need to water test it and really crawl around it on the water. I wouldn't spend 35k on it. I also feel the miles and hours don't seem to jive correctly.

If its a gps speed it could have left key on while trailering, otherwise it hit 52 off a dam where it got all the damage, lol

This whole thing seems fishy. As others have said, a lot of damage and I absolutely would insist on a water test.

Thank you for all of the feedback, much appreciated. Gave the link to this post to my wife and she’s enjoying all the confirmation that she was right and something was off.
Definitely agree about being a bit eager and feeling better that it didn’t pan out.

Anyone have an idea what Fiberglass damage like that would cost to fix properly? If she comes back to me and includes a water test, I’d like to know what I’m up against. But 1 or 2 more “steer clear’s” and I’ll completely pass or completely lowball.

Idk what the market value is for that model boat right now but wouldn’t pay any where close to what fair market value would be for that boat in good condition. As others have said, that thing is pretty beat up for having so few hours. I would be scared of what’s under that bondo/hack job. Minor scratches happen, but those are some major hits, and they clearly didn’t take the time to research proper gel/fiber glass repair.

I would keep shopping, I would rather pay a little more for a boat someone bought during COVID they didn’t use/aren’t going to use and was better taken care of. I would expect to pay a couple thousand to get all that cleaned up properly by a pro, or several weekends in the driveway attempting to do it yourself.

Did she have a title? I would be suspicious of theft or they drove that after a few many Bush Lites.

Its a 2019 with 2 owners already, why did the first one sell it to her "sister"?
2 owners that shouldn't own a boat obviously. Too much damage
I would stay clear unless the price drops a lot and a good water test

Personally, I would pass on this boat. That repair job looks like crap. A 2019 SX190 in excellent condition would be worth 30K to me.

Don't buy a questionable just to save a couple of bucks. ;)

I'd walk away without a second thought. I would never buy used without a water test. Also that repair job is a joke and is hiding what could be holes through the hull...someone was drunk or careless and caused all that damage, and bondo is not water proof below the water line. It would need to be removed, the fiberglass repaired, and gelcoat fix. And yes that max speed is impossible unless they left the key on while trailering. Run away.

If the fiberglass was damaged, the hull might be worthless. A good portion of the fiberglass isn't accessible to see or repair on these boats. Repaired gel coat could hide structural defects that affect the integrity of the hull.

The bow, stern and sides are accessible, but not most of the bottom.

No receipts = no maintenance.

Wow.
Thats crazy $$
My best top speed has been 49mph

Too bad your not closer to Miami. I'd sell you mine. You could use that 10k on a trip here.

I wouldn't buy it with out water test either. It may start on land but run like crap in the water.

they left it on while it was being towed on the trailer !!!

Very strange, wouldn't buy it without having a shop check out the repair and her coming down to whatever the fix price is making it around 30K after repair. People are strange. ...lol

I’m new to boating, but I would say, not to purchase that boat. We were to purchase a new boat and it never came in, so after over a year we decided to purchased used instead of wait. The low hours were what we thought were a good thing, but now I’m wondering if the low hours are worst because the boat was not used. I think now since I’ve done so much work on the boat it is a good deal, but wish I had done more testing on the boat. In this situation, there are many red flags that we did not have with ours. For what they are asking for used, you can almost purchase a new boat. I’d listen to the folks that have been doing this for a while and it seems they are all saying, more on to something else.
We are over all happy with our used purchase, but like I said we did not have the warning signs that I see here.
Best of luck!

That repair looks like Billy Bob down the street did it. Oil does look really dirty.

Greatly appreciate all the feedback from everyone. Typical “too good to be true” scenario, so I’m glad she declined my offer and we walked away.

I’m sure this has been asked many times, but what are good sources to look for used SX190’s? I’ve read enough about 2022 quality issues to not want a brand new one, plus boat/power sports dealers are making every dime they can right now, after pricing one out last fall. Ideally, I’d like to find a gently used 2019 or 2020 that someone decided wasn’t the boat for them or want something bigger… hopefully before they smash it into a dock a few times.

I’ve been pretty active monitoring Facebook marketplace for about a year or so, and some groups focused on Yamaha jet boats and boats for sale in Michigan. Boattrader seems like a rip off on pricing, at least what I’ve seen listed. Craigslist in my area is not a good resource.

Finally, I know it’s a seller’s market, but are posts like this are very common? Do people really spend ~30k without a test? Or do sellers post stuff like that to prevent tire kickers?
