Another oil cooler bolt sheared

I only ask because it always seems to hit around 100 hours. Mine was 99!
 
one of mine broke on its maiden voyage in my lake when I got it home... go figure.. it was fine on the test drive in OK.

I bought all the bolts/gaskets to replace it.. not leaking oil.. so hopefully that will cure it.. 58 hours on mine.
 
Sorry to hear it @kthrash but better a bolt or a few than the cooler itself. You still have a hell of a boat. Hopefully you will only experience pleasant surprises from here on out.
 
As long as the bolt head sheared off with no major damage to the cooler, I'd say you should be okay with just changing out the bolts and gasket on the affected cooler. I had less than 50 hrs. on my boat when the bolt broke. I inspect the coolers before and after every outing. Knock on wood, three boating seasons later and no issues.

My understanding was that people who were replacing bolts were using stronger bolts than the OEM parts. It also appears from reading old threads that in 2012, the 3rd bolt down was changed to a larger bolt that does not fit the 2010 and early 2011 model oil coolers.

hat is exactly right. The thread from the other forum goes into great detail about the strength of different types of replacement bolts. I believe CaptKev did a great deal of research on the replacement bolt.
 
Ive also read a lot of people have simply removed the offending bolt that was over torqued and replaced it with a factory one and had no further problems.. mine is not leaking oil, and there is not damage to the cover, so I am just going to replace the bolt and watch it.. I would rather break a $2 bolt than a $650 oil cooler.

I did this preemptively with factory bolts only on number three and have had no problems.
 
I look at this two ways. IMHO, if oil is leaking from the oil cooler, take it off and inspect it. If there are no visible signs of damage to the cooler itself such as bulging or a crack, then replace the all the bolts and gasket and just keep an eye on things after every putting. If there is no oil leak (as was my case), then, I'd say you maybe okay in not taking the cooler completely off and simply boring out the broken bolt and replace it. For peace of mind, I took my cooler off to inspect and bore out the broken bolt. I didn't use a specific torque setting when putting it back together as I couldn't find one, so I tightened just beyond a threshold where not much force was needed to loosen.

That is one of the draw backs to the Japanese production methodology of Just-In-Time. they don't account for parts usage outside of the immediate production stream.
 
Got my oil cooler fixed, took it apart, cleaned it up and put it back together, no cracks I could see under maginification, so hopefully I am all good..

I replaced the 4 bolts on the left side with new factory bolts, and put a new gasket on it...
 
I lost my port engine oil cooler bolt today...appears to have come out clean so I hope to replace, add loctite, and move on...(fingers crossed). I ordered a bolt from Yahama Sports Plaza that CapKev posted in the other forum but after reading further he posted an update that it was too big! I didn't read this far until after I already ordered. Has anyone found replacement bolts of higher quality for the 2010? Anyone had any luck just replacing? Open to any advice.

I thought capnkev found a source of higher grade bolts for his dealer to put in as stated deep in his yjb thread but it's been a long time since I've read that one.

CapnKev recommends a bolt but then later in the thread states it was too large & wouldn't fit. I see a Ronnie involved in a lot of the conversation ... Is that you? Is CapnKev on this site?

I later found the spot to reorder what appears to be factory replacement: http://www.yamahapartspro.com/oemparts/p/yamaha/90105-06185-00/bolt-flange

But don't want the same issue if it's just the same bolt and the solution is truly a stronger bolt.
