Ladies and Gents....

I have come to the conclusion that I need a Chartplotter, Depth Gauge, Fish Finder on my AR190.

I am NOT a serious fisherman yet, but I would like to pick up the hobby, so something on a budget to start with will be fine.

I can't decide if "through hull" or "in hull" (aka shoot through hull) would be a better choice, but I do not wish to have something hanging on the transom. Any words of wisdom here?

Any suggestions on a entry level device? Can I get into this for around $600 or less?

I mainly boat in the Gulf or in the local lakes around Tampa.

I would probably prefer touch screen over buttons... but that is mostly because of the size of the device/screen.

So I looked at the Airmar... now I have more questions than answers...

What is the procedure here? Select a Chartplotter, Depth Gauge, Fish Finder and then select a suitable Transducer?

I am also starting to wonder if the Through Hull might not be bad. It is flush mounted...

Anything in-hull or through hull is going to be expensive. In-hull is going to require mounting somewhere that the hull is a single layer. Perhaps in the bilge but I am uncertain of the construction of your boat.

I suggest looking at the Raymarine Dragonfly and Simrad Go lines and picking your favorite of those to use with the included transducer that you will mount on the back of your boat. Shopping sales and manufacturer rebates you can get a 5" model with charts and transducer for around $400.

Thanks. That is good intel but I am really trying not to hang something off the back of the boat. Still will look into those lines and see what kind of transducers I need to purchase to make everything work.

I understand but personally I find myself unwilling to spend $300 on a thru hull transducer which will provide the same functionality as the one that came with the plottter. It does not get in the way anyway as the pump nozzles stick out further than a transducer would.

In the Raymarine product line transom mount transducers are around $100 while thru hull transducers are around $300.

What

Which tranducer/ chartplotter combo did you use?
Lowrance Elite-4 CHIRP sonar/fish finder. I would get one with GPS and chartplotting.
I had it installed through hull, pretty much like in the Leojay thread.
I'll try to find some pictures.

EDIT: @Bruce - it was a shoot through hull. Worked perfect for what I needed.

No, I could not see the bottom of the sea when crossing Gulf Stream to Bimini. ;)
