Has anyone installed any JL 8.8’s or 7.7’s at the helm and copilot areas on a 242? I don’t believe there’s enough depth but wanted to ask if anyone knew the mounting depth or has installed either size in/around those locations? Thank you

You won't be able to fit either at the location to the left. That's where I installed the M650s and I had to bend the terminals at a right angle to get them in, and they were still hitting the hull. I doubt the location on the right will work either. If you remove the carpeted wooden wall on the back left under the seat, you can look back up in there and see how tight it is.

Did you end up getting the speakers in the panels or mount them elsewhere? I put in a pair of matching 6.5" Polks and found I had about 3.5" of clearance behind the panels in my 212s which was plenty for my needs, but I guess big spacers would be needed for the big 7.7/8.8 speakers?

Save your money and buy Skar speakers.
While Skar speakers are much cheaper, I've heard them and you get what you pay for...just average sound quality like most in the price range. The stock Polk DB652 speakers in my boat sound better with more accurate tonal quality, and they cost the same.

Yes JL costs more, but they have much better sound quality and better builds, especially for marine environments where they have sealed designs for the harsher environments. I'd wager the Skar marine speakers are not properly sealed, just plastic baskets. JL is also rated to handle higher wattage for louder output. Skar exaggerates their specs, badly, for instance claiming 320w for a 6.5" speaker sounds impressive but that's peak combined for the pair which really means 160w peak each or 80w continuous per speaker.

Skar is ok for an ok price...but don't ever confuse them with JL to save a few bucks.
