Is it common to have metal shavings and fiberglass shavings come out of the drain hole on a new boat? I purchased a brand new AR210 and have had it out 3 times now. Each time I pull the plug I have had metal shavings and fiberglass shards fall out. The first time, there were so many that the water could t even get out. Ran my finger in there to unplug it.

Figured this was from assembly and common, but wanted to make sure before going to the dealer. Taking it in next week for the 10 hour service. Also have to have them fix the rear seat as I slipped and caught myself on it and bent the tabs that hold it in place. A pic is attached of the last time I unplugged it. Figured I better snap a pic to help explain.

Also, I’m having an issue with the head unit screen. Not sure what is going on but hope they warranty that as well. I already bought a new head unit anyhow, but plan on selling the factory one. Thanks for any advice/info!

Filings and shavings are pretty common to find in the bilge; I've rinsed mine out intentionally, but still find the occasional bonus material.

I’ve got a 2009 and still pull debris out of the bilge this spring, totally normal for these boats.

The best thing you can do is put the trailer on a steep angle, remove the cleanout tray, then use a garden hose to spray up inside the bilge so that it rinses all the manufacturing crap out. Very common on these boats.

Very common, and very normal with Yamaha boats (see previous posts) Make sure there is no debris when installing your drain plug, it will leak. Put some yamalube or equivalent on that o-ring too.

Just pop that cover between the port/starboard cleanouts and spray a hose straight down? I'll pop that tonight and shine a light down there to see if I can see the debris. Or, is that the quickest/easiest/closest way to get water down to the drain plug with hopefully some pressure?

I pulled the plug on my new boat 2 weeks ago and noticed the same thing. Thanks for asking this question because I was wondering it myself.

What the heck is up with that head unit?!

Remove the entire cleanout tray (where the screws are). This will give you the most access. As a new boat owner you shouldn’t have to do this but it’s really the only way you can know it’s done right or if you trust your dealer service department to do it. It’s a quick job and don’t worry that tray isn’t actually sealed. You can add some sealant when you reinstall if you wish. With the tray out of the way you can get good access to spray all in there and with the plugs out it will drain as you rinse.

I think I could have started a hardware store with the stuff that came out of mine the first half dozen times. The boat has been great, even though the various screws, washers, zip ties aluminum shavings etc….made me nervous at first.78C46E0F-B929-497D-8E95-198A043A99D9.jpeg962A25F4-9496-464B-9BDE-BCA88AB12BBC.jpeg

Yamaha: The Gift that Keeps on Giving.

(I could work in their marketing department)

I'm curious about the black piece...looks important

Thank you for the info and the pic. Very helpful. I’m hoping to get as much of it flushed out as possible. Ran my finger in there which was a mistake. Been fighting fiberglass splinters all day in my fingers. Can’t see them, but they get me every now and then.

Wow! Looks like their drain system works too well. Grabs everything on its way out.

It’s part of some sort of weird zip tie. I’ve seen a few intact ones holding wiring harnesses.
Okay, that makes sense. Perfectly cut. I have seen those.

My AR250 has less than 15 hours on it. At the end of a recent outing, the key chain broke and the two keys were lost. I found one on the ground pretty quickly but couldn't locate the second and finally gave up knowing I have a backup set - but when I got home I decided to look and see if maybe that lost key fell down and found its way into a drain and all the way to the bilge. When I got down deep into the engine compartment I actually found a pair of vice grips in there that either had to come from manufacturing process or from some type of dealer prep.

Shortly after my son found the missing key - it had fallen into the cooler as I grabbed a water for the ride home.

Keep looking. You may end up with a nice tool box. ?
