Polk Audio MM651

I replaced my 2015 sx192 polk db651 speakers with polk mm651 speakers and noticed a huge improvement. A week later I added a clarion xc1410 amp and wow, it is awesome. The only thing I don't like is that at high volume I hear distortion. I think the amp is over saturated!

The speakers can take more than what the xc1410 can provide...

Should I get a bigger amp?

@Irvs You might want to get a bigger amp but I will let you know this weekend. I plan to have the amp finally installed. I installed the speakers last weekend and they were 100 times better than the stock Seaworthy speakers. The db651's are certainly better than my Seaworthy but the MM's are great.

The clarion looks to have an rms of 50watts per channel and these Polks want more than that. I got a Wet Sounds HT-4 and right now plan to wire it at 4ohms which will give me 110 rms per channel for my 4 in cabin speakers. Then I will run the 2 transoms off my head unit.

If your not going to add an amp, save your money and get DB651. The MM651UM, just like the JL Audio MX 650 or larger, will need power behind to a true amplification of at least 50W, and probably 75W is better in some instances. I'm not talking about the 50W that fusion or clarion tells your their HU puts out, that is not true stand alone power and won't drive the speaker to its potential. Sure, they all sound better than a seaworthy or even a db651, but those are entry level speakers and there is really no comparison in quality, sound, or cost. A DB651 can be bought with warranty for around $99 for TWO pair, 4 speakers. The JL's MX650's and the Polk MM651UM's go for over $200 for only two speakers. And if you buy from an authorized dealer, that can provide the factory warranty, you will pay more. This is really apples and oranges to compare the DB651 with either of the other two speakers. And the seaworthy speaker is a PAPER CONE. Any of them will sound better with an amp behind them, but the upper end need it or your just waisting money on a speaker that will sound weak and empty without the power behind it, and listen to it amplified and your eyes will bug out. It isn't about being loud, it is about the speaker being able to be efficient in the range it was designed to operate. Otherwise, your don't get close to the ratings on the speaker in any category. And the Fusion claiming 26 watts rms...well, that's about 5W compared to a true 26W from a dedicated amp. I am not trying to be a wise guy here, it is just the reality. HU is a preamp and not going to deliver full wattage. So even to compare speakers, get them to their design power needs and then compare. I won't say that you can't enjoy music from any of them off HU power, I am just saying that they will be underpowered and capable of WAY more. And if you power them right, the speaker will be clearer, crisper, fuller, and more vibrant at EVERY volume level compared to unpowered. My final recommendation is to stay away from online stores that are not authorized to sell a brand...no warranty other than online store, no support, no nothing. Since this is mostly about Polk, I will plug @PEARCE MM651UM's...they are every bit as good as my JL MX650's. They do a little better in certain areas of the spectrum and a little worse in other areas compared to the JL, they all have pluses and minuses. But the JL's MX650's should fit where the MM651UM's fit.

@Irvs That speaker wants and needs 50W of true power minimum but @96Pirate I think 110W each might be a tad too much. I would have to look at the specs but a good audio retailer such as @Earmark Marine could give you exactly what you want to drive them with.

Thanks for info regarding the speakers @trashygasman. I thought about just amplifying stock speakers and looked at the XC1410 amp and all the post on here about it. Lots of folks have good things to say about it and it looked like a good option especially for the checkbook. But my fear was that I spend $100 on a low power amp, then I don't get what I want (sound wise), so I then upgrade speakers, but power of the xc1410 amp is too low (like what @Irvs suggested), so then I buy bigger amp and $100 was wasted on XC1410 and have to rewire in another amp. This has been the story to my life in the past, so trying to avoid falling into my old frugal ways which ironically usually ends up costing me more $$ in the end.

Ultimately I think I will do something similar to what @96 pirate is currently doing. Amplify my 4 MM651 speakers in cabin, then take 2 of my stock speakers and mount them behind the swimplatform backrests. Have them wired off the headunit (no amp) and so I can isolate these only (to save on battery power) and have them just for low volume, chillaxing on the swim deck or swimming in the water. And yes I have read all the rants regarding the speakers behind the swimplatform backrests so no need to rehash all of that here. Of course at the rate I get around to all this, check back in 2019 to see how it all worked out. :)

The Db's give you amazing crisp sound for the money. You lose a little thump of the lows compared to the MMs, but I have a dedicated pair of subs to give me what the Db's don't. However again I love the Db's clarity. The other bonus is the Db's don't require as much power to get loud and clear. In my setup, I have them running of the Clarion XC1410, performing very well.

BTW - I have WS HT-4 amp for the tower speakers, and at the close-out discount price of $219 or so at Crutchfield, that’s another crazy good value.

The mm651 speakers sound amazing worn the clarion xc1410; however, when I play them really loud I get some distortion.

I too believe the wet sounds ht-4 provides too much power for the mm651 speakers. It's rated at 110wrms @4 ohms and more at 2ohms. The mm651 are 2.7ohms.

So just by looking at that I think there is a potential to blow the speakers if I'm not too careful if I go with a wet sounds ht-4.

So now you guys have me re-thinking my setup. The HT-4 has 110w per channel at 4ohms and 150 at 2 ohms. The mm651 have 100w rms and 200w max. Obviously you do not want to push to 200w. But will there really be a negative impact to the speakers by going 10w over the speakers rms? Granted these speakers do have a higher stated rms than others, including the JL 650's I believe. Could it be overstated and then I do run the real risk of blowing the speakers?

I do have the option in configuring to 2ohms and run all the speakers through the amp. So at 150w at 2 ohms, each speaker would get 75w. Would that be the better option?

Exactly why I picked this one up. Not sure if they still have them though as they are getting harder to find at that price.

I just looked it up on Polk's site as I thought I had seen it before.

Recommended amp power is 15-150w per channel.

I don't think your overloading them @96Pirate . But it does depend on how the amp you drive them with is producing that power, and how high you set the gain. You will like those speakers, @PEARCE has them and I have heard them.

OK, good to hear. I still have the option to wire them the 2 ways so I may try it each way. I can say that I like the sound already and that is just with the Fusion. I can't wait to hookup the amp this weekend though.

I think you should be fine haha. When you test it make sure you increase the volume slowly especially the louder you go and watch out for speaker crackling I guess.

The amp will put out the 110 w rms continuous if driven all the way to compression.....to be sure you don't damage the speakers be careful the higher you crank them. :)

Damnit, I missed that Crutchfield sale. Can anyone post a link for a ht4 sale?

I just saw that the amp has gain control too! Sweet, you're golden!

I need to get off this forum. It's sole purpose is absolute destruction of my personal finances.

Well, my wife always praises herself when she buys something on sale. So shouldn't we as well???

I feel the same way!! I let mine know every time I save money on mods! Lol

@Irvs @mrmeaniemeateaterman
Just saw this. I cannot comment on their service and support but the price is right.

Haha, I Googled it and ordered one from creative audio immediately after my last post.

Coming in tomorrow and will report back on how much of a difgerence feeding twice the power to my mm651um speakers turns out.

My clarion xc1410 will go in my truck along with the db651 speakers off the sx192.

I can't wait to hookup the amp this weekend though.
@96Pirate Well....What's the verdict. My VISA card is burning a hole in my pocket.
If you say you didn't get around to it because weather was just too nice this weekend I will let you slide this time.

@Irvs I will be interested to hear your honest opinion as well once you get your wetsounds amp hooked up. I like the XC1410 for the price and the fact that it should not be as huge of a battery drain like the wetsounds amp. Trying to keep my single battery dream alive and avoid speaker upgrades leading to amp mods leading to battery additions leading to wiring mods leading to charger mods.
