I received a very special gift from my family as a Christmas present. It is a 24x18x1.5 Walnut Endgrain cutting board. It is so nice looking I wanted to hang it on the wall, however, the Matriarch gave a big emphatic "no" to that idea. She said it was meant to be used and that it gets better with age just like the Chef. Of course the Chef has had 51 years of training under her tutelage.

I know however I have to tell it is being used a lot over the holidays from cutting ham and turkey to dicing vegetables nd herbs It is holding up great. I am very impressed with it.[flag]

I made a few 3d end grain cutting boards for Christmas gifts. Endgrain boards don't tend to show knife marks as eeadily as face grain boards do, so it should hold up to multiple lifetimes of hard use. If they do start showing wear, they are very easy to refinsh like new again. So don't be afraid to use the hell out of it. I'm sure they didn't get it for you to just look at.

I agree and I am looking forward to many years of use. So far it has been used on turkey ham vegetables fresh herbs and tonight fresh tuna. [flag]

What finish do you use on these? Lacquer is too soft right?

I've used shellac, and a few of the curing oils as well. I saw a guy on YouTube use laquer very successfully. There's a bit of a trick to finishing end grain boards so they look good for years with almost zero maintenance.
