Struck Submerged log

Yes, I just had my first claim for hitting a something like that (also BoatUS insurance). Very good experience for me getting it fixed. Sure, was without the boat for a bit, but no issues with the repair or the process (other than the fact that the GEICO website won't let you upload photos where it says you can--you need to email them).

Good luck with the repair and glad no one was hurt. Here in Texas, those lanyards are now the law (so I have been trying to be better about wearing mine). Guess this is a good reminder, as that could have gone very wrong. Keep us updated on your progress!
Thank you, I hope to have the same experience you did with the repair. I posted the BoatUs links, but I have my boat insured with Ski Safe. I didn't know about the lanyard law, makes sense though.
Like you said, could have gone very wrong. My grandkids are usually draped all over the bow rail yelling for me to go faster. Glad they weren't with us this trip.
 
where's vista point? There are definitely some areas where flooded timber are common.
West side of the lake, almost opposite New Hope.
 
Wow! Glad you are all ok. Man that blows. Reminds me of my first ride in another Yamaha product. A Rhino. Driving in snow and this branch was at juuuuuuussssst the right angle to come right up threough the floor and stop us dead. It was. S.Y.P moment for sure. View attachment 132011

Yeah! That someone was ME! I was the passenger, and it was pitch black out. Only the camera flash let me know how close I came to being impaled. hahahaha. They say God watches out for children, drunkards and fools. :) 1598845816403.png

Maybe this was someone telling you that they shouldn't be allowed to ride over the bow rail. Doesn't have to be a stump at just the right angle--hit a sandbar or something and that could be a bad result as well. Improve and go forward.
 
We were in about 15 feet of water moving along on plane when we felt a pretty good jolt . No question we impacted something. Port engine stalled, I killed the starboard engine, tossed an anchor, and starting looking . Bilge seemed clean, no water intrusion, gates and rudder seemed ok, but when I pulled the cleanout plugs, the port impeller was jammed with wood.

I saw your location, and remembered something that happened when I was 10 or 12. We used to travel up to Canada, somewhere near the Rideau canal. We had a 16 ft Larson runabout with a 60 hp outboard. I think we were exploring Dunder Rock ? Not sure if I have that name right. Anyway, on the way back to our cabin, the engine gets whacked right out of the water, prop chewed to bits. I think we hit a submerged tree stump or rock. So apparently, I do this every 50 years or so.
 
When the adjustor comes out to look at your boat, I'd make sure that intake tunnel, impellers, and even the drive shaft are all checked and made right in the process. Glad no one was hurt
 
Going through a similar issue with my hull early in the season I would suggest this:
1) File a claim
2) Ask your insurance if you can temp repair until the season is over with. Get their answer in writing.
3) Get an estimate, make sure the repair shop is cool with you using some temp bondo. Should be because they'll have to cut and patch anyway.
4) Buy some short strand fiberglass Bondo and patch it up. Sand it down.
5) Take it with you on your vacation and enjoy the boat.
6) Repair it before you put it away for the winter.

We hit a rock area years ago that scared the crap out of us in what we thought was 15 feet of water - there was an unmarked underwater ridge. We've never hit the water without some kind of guidance since, especially in strange waters. Get yourself a chartplotter or the Navionics App and stay out of the danger zones.

I got her back a few weeks ago, been busy and haven't updated this post. Took over 6 weeks, since it had to go to a fiberglass shop and wait my turn. Estimates were around 3600 hundred, which I thought was pretty good considering the damage. Wound up being even less, Insurance sent me a check very quickly. The adjuster never saw the boat, but Chatlee Marine has a good rep, so they only asked for some photos.

I had the boat out a few times since, runs , feels, and looks perfect. They replaced one impeller, the grate, and straightened the Cobra steering in addition to the hull damage. Had it out Saturday morning, she ran around 7800 and was still climbing at 52 mph. If it wasn't so choppy out, I would have let it run longer to see what the top end really is, but I was plenty happy with that.

I hope to squeeze in a few more outings this season, but very satisfied with the result.

@granpachuck Where did you have it repaired? I have some rock rash on the bottom of my boat that needs attention. Chatlee says they are not doing fiberglass now -- their guy doing the work left.

We boat in Jordan, too, and you've got me worried. I know there's lots of submerged timber north of 64 but I didn't know of any unmarked submerged timber near Vista Point. Funny you said that. Chatlee told me the same thing, but they do have someone they use, and it seems like they do not want to share who. I asked them if I could talk to the glass guy and and inquire about some other work, and they said they would ask for me..

I have visited Auto Marine Services in Garner and have heard they do good work.

I will post a screen shot later this week of where it was. I have it on my phone, but it could have been a large floater just below the surface, and it not in that same location any longer.
I placed an arrow on your pic, hope that helps. Now I know why there were very few boats in this quiet spot on the lake.

@granpachuck, thanks for the heads up. I've definitely been in that general area before; I'll be more careful about going into that area in the future. Glad your crew was all ok!!!
